Apple WatchOS 10 Topographic Mapping: Public Beta Hands-on!

Hands-on with Apple WatchOS 10 and the new topographic map feature to see how it actually works, both the good and the bad.

In this video I dive into how to access the maps, where the maps are available, and where they aren’t. Plus the trailhead feature, how to route and to do navigation within the maps, and everything else you might want to know about the Apple WatchOS 10 topo maps on the Apple Watch (Apple Watch Ultra in this case).

  1. Can you please help me about the maps?when you got the offline maps and you want to use them or just use the gps to see your location you open in Apple
Watch ultra the location on only?or you open also on iPhone?also you have to have the Bluetooth connected?

  2. In the release version of Watch OS 10, I’m not seeing topo maps for either the Cascades in OR or the Catskills in NY. This is on a Series 8 Watch; it’s possible Maps is different on an Ultra but I haven’t tested that.

  3. certainly odd i cant get a workout view for maps with a tracking line from when i started the workout. workoutdoors app does this so i guess ill have to stick to that.

  4. Not very well integrated since you can't use it in the workout app. You should think Apple could do much better. Garmin is still way ahead.

  5. Drank the koolAid years ago and have an iPhone but no incentive, compelling functionality, etc., for me to “convert” from Garmin sports watches …

  6. I wonder if this is design limitation or designer limitation, but either way it kind of seems like Apple is struggling to figure out who is AUW actually for. If they want to appeal to outdoor crowd, the hikers, the trail runners, etc… the obvious quick win is the ability to read GPX files. You don't even need anything fancy, basic offline topo + GPX track would satisfy large majority of outdoor crowd imho.
What they're doing seems like kind of pointless. Who goes on a trail and at the last minute uses the watch to find a route for them???? You sit at home, map the route you want to take, then want the watch to follow that path.

  7. I saw Mt.Hood Parkdale cached on your maps, did you happen to visit or is that just some random testing? There's some great riding out there (both road and mtb) and some long-standing KoMs held by the cookie man himself. highly recommended

  8. So I’m happy about the offline maps and can live with having my phone with. I just hope we get route planning and navigation. I can even deal with switching between apps, it’s just a double tap on the crown. But no Route upload is a deal breaker.

  9. It doesn’t work right? Imagine an Apple Watch Series 5 on WatchOS 10 and an iPhone 8 non compatible with iOS 17. It doesn’t work either?
