You probably have a lot of photos. Everyone does these days. Now, what the heck do you do with them? How do you find… well… anything? The answer is if you watch and follow along, it’s gonna look like this:

Follow these directions and when you’re done you will have a folder for every year (or group of years) in your Photo Library. All of the events that took place in that year, will be broken down and organized into Albums. This process DOES require you to use a Mac because we are going to utilize the amazingly brilliant feature known as SMART ALBUMS.

  1. Great info and a solid method and strategy for organization. My only request is on the next iteration of this video is to accurately describe Albums and Folders. Both terms are conflated in the current vid.

  2. Hello and thank you for your very helpful, easy to follow tutorial.  I spent hours going through my laptop photos, choosing favorites, deleting pics.  I had multiples of, and cleaning out things that didn't need to be saved.  What I didn't think of doing before I started was to be sure all the photos on my phone were also on my computer.  So all the pictures that were on my computer, that I went through and deleted,  are still on my phone plus thousands more.  When I sync. them I will have to start over.  Here's my plan, please let me know if you think it will work or if you have a better idea.  I will "favorite" all the photos on my computer before syncing. Then at least all the photos that will be imported will be obvious.  Thoughts?

  3. This is absolutely brilliant and an amazing way to clean up your photo library! I have started moving everything from Google to Apple to consolidate my digital life down to just 1 cloud service, and this has helped me immensely! I used Google Takeout to export my photos, and then I imported them into Apple Photos, and have started following this tutorial… so far so good!

  4. Thank you for this – when you've chosen your favourites for a year – I gather I'm supposed to go to my Favourites album and work from within there to create the albums for the year, and perhaps unfavourite them as they get filed into albums? Also – I have that weird thing where, "in any" and "not in any" produces different numbers – how do I capture all the photos?

  5. I don't want to identify my photos by by date, time. I was so happy with my organization of photos when I had Version Mohave (i photos – "events") but was advised to upgrade to Ventura. All my previous photos (now in Ventura) were dumped in "photos"(Ventura) all 1,000 of them, in a hodge-podge manner. I find NO agreeable way to organize my photos. A friend gifted me a book
"Photos for Mac". It is 312 pages long!!! Why would I want to spend all that time reading reading a book? I have more important things to tend to in life. Your lecture is no help, very confusing. I give up.

  6. Hey, I'm just following this and it's working great for photos; however, when I create an Album with a selection of Videos from a Smart Album, the videos stay in the smart album also… Any ideas?

  7. Does anyone know how to import pictures from "latest" or "library" to a specific album in the same order as they were imported into "latest"? If I mark 10 or 100 photos in "latest"/"library" and then import them into a specific album, the order will be completely different, which is quite irritating since it means one has to spend a lot of time reordering them. For some reason this particular feature seams to have changed from my last laptop to my current one, even though it is the exact same model (macbook pro 2015).

  9. I am seriously starting to think of carrying a pocket camera. 1- its faster to work with when exporting from sd card and organizing.

IPhotos needs a major update. I’ve even provided my feedback several times via their website. I really wonder why they have it this locked down.

I love Apple buttt Android devices are easier to work with exporting photos/organizing.

  10. hey I'm wondering, can you upload a .mp4, .heic, .hevc files onto iphotos into album from a Mac? and will that file when you moved a specific file onto iPhotos, show up on my iPhone too?

  11. Does storing 2TB of photos in icloud slow and eventually crash your other mac devices, even if settings are optimised? what is the best long term solution? is google better and how does it interact with mac?

  12. Thank you. A much needed revamping of my photos and the use of the software. I knew it was powerful but just never used it. Ive been a Mac person from back in the Mac 512 days.

  13. Deleting all albums before starting this tutorial is okay if you only have less than 100 pics or so. I have 14.531 – to go through them all again and sort them into new folders (albums) would take months in selecting the pics for each particular album. Deleting all the albums would be counter productive for this user. Also the title of this clip should be: How to organize your photos by year, as there’s a multitude of reasons to have photos categorized that don’t correspond to the year they were taken.

  14. Really great tutorial – though I would suggest you start the video with a warning for people to backup their library. I worked in tech and the number of people that played around with photos and lost their entire library because they didn't back up is way too high. This should be the first part of any video tutorial.

  15. This video is fabulous!!
But, I have one problem – when i'm setting up smart albums there's no photos that show up:( I've rewatched and redone things so many times i have no idea what i'm missing!! Anyone else having this issue??

  16. Two observations: 1) the content and delivery are fantastic – just what I needed! 2) the structure and flow of your video is a masterclass in how to teach on YouTube. Thank you! Subscribed.
