For Chinese smartphone brands, media reports stated that this Monday, Xiaomi App Store, OPPO App Store, Vivo App Store, Tencent App Store, and Baidu Mobile Assistant announced that all apps released in the app stores in the future must be supported in an orderly manner. With 64-bit Arm architecture, all applications and games must upload APKs with 64-bit builds as planned before the end of this year (covering existing application updates and new version releases).
According to the official timetable, all mobile Android applications in the Chinese market are scheduled to be fully 64-bit before the end of August 2022.
In fact, as a developer of the CPU instruction set architecture for iOS and Android devices, ARM announced at the Developer Summit in October last year that starting in 2022, its Cortex large-core CPU will withdraw support for 32-bit. From 2023, all Cortex-A series mobile CPU cores (large and small cores) will only support 64-bit.
The advantage of 64-bit is to improve the performance of the software, but also to better schedule memory usage. For example, the vivo application store stated that supporting 64-bit devices is the only way for Android applications to use more than 4GB of RAM address space, use wider registers and higher precision in data processing, and obtain enhanced security features.
For developers, applications written in Java or Kotlin programming language and any library or SDK are ready for 64-bit devices. The transition to 64-bit is not complicated. In the future, you will only need to focus on 64-bit compatible applications and save money. Cost and speed up the time to market.
