Japan is the second largest market for Apple’s iPhone in the world. In recent years, Google Pixel mobile phones have continued to grow in Japan’s market share, becoming Apple’s iPhone’s biggest rival in Japan. Market research released the latest mobile phone sales report for the second quarter in Japan. Google Pixel is not only the number one Android phone brand in Japan, but also closes the gap with Apple’s iPhone.
Market research IDC Japan announced the ranking of Japan’s mobile phone market share in the second quarter of 2023. The first place is still Apple’s iPhone, accounting for 45.5% of the market, down 2% from the same period last year. Google Pixel is now the No. 1 Android leader in Japan, with a market share of 15.3%, while Samsung ranks third with 7.9%.
Japanese brands are losing ground. Only FCNT (7.8%) and Sony (6.7%) are left at No. 4 and No. 5 respectively, but the former has previously filed for bankruptcy.

Japan’s total mobile phone shipments in the second quarter were only 7.31 million units, a decrease of 11.7% compared to the same period last year. It can be seen that the impact of the depreciation of the yen is still significant. Smart phones accounted for 7.24 million units, of which iOS fell by 15.3%, and Android also declined by 8.3%.
The report also pointed out that the key reason why Google Pixel can perform so well in Japan is the cooperation with telecommunications provider DOCOMO, which has greatly increased shipments.
