SNAP – The Intel CPU Latency Story (Part 1 of 2)

I always thought Intel’s CPUs were snappy, in fact that were the snappiest of snappiest, even vs Ryzen, where AMD have improved a lot over the years with their latency. However with the advent of 12th gen Alder lake and 13th Gen i9-12900k and 13900K CPUs respectively, Intel took something AWAY, and that was they moved the I/O driver directly off the CPU (that’s what I was told from multiple sources), and this was the exact reason why latency issues have been occurring on these CPUs for windows users, not the e-cores or the p-cores.

  1. Noted this allso last year and wondered was there something wrong with my system. What is Tech YES City's daily driver or go to setup for best latency in terms of cpu+mb+gpu+ram combo ?

  2. I/O is the one of the culprit but there are more that affect latency. Modern hardware/OS have built in much more "power saving features" that affect latency. C-states is one of them but there is more that are visible only on some of the motherboards and you need to disable them all.
Another problem is that when old hardware encounter error it will crash modern wont do that instead it will do "error correction" which penalty will be latency (there will be 0 whea errors).Culprit of it can be unstable uv/oc or faulty hardware or RFI/EMI.
This is why i always recommend using Static overclock with atlest 30mv vdroop and full metal pc cases without window
PS: if you want desktop/games to be "snappy" you need to force GPU to p0 state otherwise it will cause massive dpc latency spikes .

  3. Brian, I have an i5-12500 with no e-cores. I don't seem to have this problem. Although you turned off the ecores within the bios when testing, perhaps this still isn't good enough. The cpu architecture with the ecores may be the problem? Perhaps a clean p-cores only alder lake doesn't have this problem. Can you test this with a 12400 or any alder lake cpu without the garbage e-cores built in? This would be an interesting test. I hope you see this comment!

  4. I believe this is partly true but there are gazillion setting in bios and windows which will affect your latency. Im in the process of tweaking my PC for audio production and I have been able to make the 13700K snappier than anything Ive ever used from either Intel or AMD. These tweaks include e.g. disabling c-states, various power plan settings and disabling core parking.

  5. i wonder if it's not a bit a placebo sure may find it snapier but benchmarks are better, time to render a scene as well etc , go back to a 9900k ? no way in some games it becomes a limiting factor, a tad less responsiveness , if it is a thing vs more cores well….

  6. This isn't even just lag, this is more like being on a queue, at this point 😂 Even my old 3770K and SATA SSD are faster than your system 😂

I think you might have something wrong elsewhere. Seconds of latency in a 2022/2023 era system is nuts

  7. Too bad, still my next computer will be an Intel because I want it to work properly. I have enough of the USB mess. Even with PCI-E USB cards copying files just deadlocks Explorer. Even if it's slower, at least it will work at all.

  8. No one have seemed to discuss 11th generation mobile processors. Could anybody please tell if they are exempt from this issue or not especially the laptop chips

  9. But you haven't said anything about 11th gen, is it affected too ?
You were told that shift began with 12th gen, but you will be downgrading to 10th gen. Why not 11?

  10. Their seems to be bigger issues than a little latency. I recently upgraded form a low end 10 year old HDD based system to a state of the art high end modern system, and it feels the same. I should of increased the speed of everything in my computer by x10, but doing things still includes just about as much laggy ans waiting as by old i3, 2 core, hdd system. Their is clearly some bottleneck in computing where all advancements in the past 15 years are worthless for general every day tasks.

  11. Respectfully mate I feel as though you have a poor understanding of the issue you're experiencing and perhaps computer hardware and software in general if you truly believe this is the cause.

  13. Interesting video, could this also explain other issues I have been seeing on the I9 12900, where if I am selecting files manually with the shit and click, every now and then it copies the files instead of selecting them? And when using the Alt+Tab, every now and then instead of popping up and moving just one, it has a mind of its own and moves randomly where it feels like it?

  14. I got a much worse experience than you when I updated win10 to win11 on ryzen 5600x. Open the search or what the new menu is called could take 30 seconds. A clean reinstall made the whole system snappy.

  15. Lol. Measuring performance in Windows/Adobe software software is a crime. It can't run on any hardware. Even if I/O became slower – dragging a file/editing a video/editing document does not include any IO besides mouse/keyboard/screen/audio. It is such a bs.

  16. I have a 12th gen cpu that had the same problem…..It came with windows 11 on it. I installed windows 10 and the problem went away…That computer does not go online and is never connected to the internet….I believe windows is sending monitoring data through the bios bypassing any security or encryption. When this data file gets larger and outside the normal operating parameters its causes the system to lagg. My system would lagg up to 30 seconds randomly when just dragging a file.

  17. I would like to add, that before the nehalem i7's, the time that the Athlons kicked intel ass, it was in big part due to the on-die memory controller, that was like "the first time" on the Intel vs AMD cpu fight that they started integrating northbridge systems inside the cpu die for way better latency. And memory loves low latency

  18. I was noticing lots of latency while cleaning out pc and using textboxes on my new 13gen laptop. I thought it was windows 11 but i was confused because i got pcie4 nvme m.2 6000mbs ssd. Work intel win11 pc with ssd lags out also. My ryzen 1700 5year old pc window 10 with pcie3 nvme ssd never lags out. I'm waiting for 2026-27 to build a new AMD pc

  19. I’ve got a 7900x/asrock build that while not very fast despite the power draw, it at least doesn’t freeze when I open a file explorer window. I went AMD a few years ago with a 5950x and it’s night & day though. My cursed work laptop with a 12th gen i7 well… first month it was great till a windows update, think last October or November made it freeze up and stutter. Intel and Nvidia both patched drivers to fix the stutter. I only saw problems on that dang laptop.

  20. I have delidded + direct die 10900kf @ 5.3Ghz core + 5.0Ghz uncore + Maximus XII Apex and 32gb dual rank samsung b-die @ 4600Mhz 16-16-16-36 which got 35ns latency in AIDA64.
I saw 13900ks and 7800x3d got around 60% better fps and really temped to upgrade but after watching this I will stay with my cometlake for a long time.
btw fyi my overclock config is faster than stock config (4.9Ghz) + xmp 3600 cl14-15-15-35 by as far as 24% in very cpu limited scenario like totalwar warhammer 2 skaven benchmark in the last scene (52 fps vs 42 fps).

  21. I'm sorry, but this doesn't make any sense. Why would this only affect some users? And it must be a very small number of users, since nobody has been talking about this for nearly 2 years.
What even is an I/O driver? The IOH was just a name of the north bridge, and all it had was the PCI-Express controller, the QPI link to the CPU and and DMI link to the south bridge. It had literally nothing to do with the I/O directly, it was just a link. Before it was called the MCH, when it also had the memory controller in it. All of that was moved onto the CPU die for a latency decrease and cost reduction. There's no north bridge anymore. The CPU still has the PCI-E and memory controllers on die. Where could they possibly move that "I/O driver", whatever it may be? It would increase costs, so why would they do it?
It has to be a configuration issue. Are your power saving options disabled? Is Windows running in UEFI or Legacy (CSM) mode? Are you sure you don't have High Precision Event Timer enabled and forced, which is a disaster on modern systems?
I upgraded to a 13600KF + Z690 two months ago and the system runs like a dream. I haven't experienced any of the examples you mentioned.
None of it makes any sense. Please investigate this issue further before making these kind of allegations. This is pure speculation at the moment.

  22. I had almost this exact issue at 6:00. Programs freezing for a few seconds, slow loading of directories, system becoming unresponsive when many io requests were made. I assume it was a problem PCIE bus having to correct errors, but it's odd how similar this is.
