So, my galaxy s22 ultra display just got shattered, totaled. It’s over. Here is how it happened and how much it will cost me to fox it.

This was my main Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra with 1TB of storage, thankfully I have a temporary backup S22 Ultra for the next week weeks while the other one is repaired.

Let’s dive in.

  1. First of all, there's a very good reason why Samsung has sexed up the idea of an 'endless', "fall off the edge of the world" look for their screens. No question it's a real selling point because it looks so classy. Today, more than ever, phone = fashion, and they 'know' that nobody's gonna wanna cover that up, even if that raw unprotected glass edge is just waiting to crack upon impact.

Samsung also understands better than most 'how' they measure impact resistance and how a thing called 'Young's Modulus of Elasticity' is used to determine the difference between a materials 'hardness' and it's 'toughness'. So, in egineering terms, the figures they release regarding the 'impact resistance' of their Gorilla Glass are completely accurate… when measurements are taken from the centre of an unsupported phone screen where it is able to flex to a degree, and the materials 'toughness' can come into play. But the edges of the screen 'are' supported by the phones frame, they cannot flex upon impact, and therefore, the materials' own scratch resistance in the form of it's tensile strength, makes it very prone to shattering simply because the energy from any impact has nowhere to go but back out of the glass.

Samsung also knows that in a world where control of supply of demand is king of all business models, they sit on the throne when it comes to replacement screens. It's been a brilliant bit of marketing when you think about it. Give the market something 'classy' to show off, but engineer it in such a way that it is highly susceptible to damage if left uncovered. Then, using remarkable test figures for strength and toughness of the material most susceptible to damage to sooth customer concerns, have them leave the product in an unprotected state so they can fully enjoy the eye candy, to all but garrentee you can gouge another $500 out of their wallet, when the chickens of their gamble finally come home to roost..or, have them pay you a subscription to insure against their own vanity…😂

Anyhow, bottom line, no matter who makes it or what laboratory test state, if you think you can own a phone with an exposed glass edge without it being 'HIGHLY' susceptible to cracking, you are delusional. If you think fitting a phone cover to such a phone, that does not also cover that sexy glass edge is somehow going to diminish that susceptibility, you too are delusional.

All of these phones bare the same risk to the consumer, and the phone manufacturers who have made them 'the must have appliance' are to be condemned, or congratulated, for so successfully turning our stupid vanity, that allows us to so easily put fashion, before function, against us.

  2. my phone just broke like that.. the side is chipped. i had a case on it and it never fell out of my pocket. looked at my phone and half the screen was broken. i wont be getting a samsung again they are junk

  3. This is the second time my 22 ultra has been damaged this year in similar fashion. The first time i was using an Otterbox case & Zagg screen protector and of course the phone slipped out of my hand when I went to pull it out of my pocket and it landed on gravel, the screen was still operable even with a massive cluster of damaged glass and white pixels underneath the almost unphased screen protector, that cost me $500 out of pocket. On the second go there's a pelican phone case & some amazon privacy screen protector, I was doing stupid man stuff standing on the top of my truck trying to cut some branches off a drooping tree and I hear an audible notification, pull my phone out of my pocket and check it real quick and i go to put it back, well it wasn't secure when i put it in my pocket. Well, that bugger flew so fast it looked like it went to go get milk after hearing it was gonna be a father and smacked on the same gravel lot and bouncing into a ditch, front screen doesn't turn on and doesn't appear to be damaged but the back looks beat to hell. This has all happened within the span of four months. I think this is my sign to stop buying curved screens or just samsung altogether, I'm using my five year old S9+ in the meantime until I bide my time on the last two years of my verizon contract or pay the ludicrous fee to have whatever board is broken swapped and the screen including the front and back glass

  4. same thing happemnd to my s22 ultra. I had the same crack and same white line. Now half my screen is white ande the only way i can use it is with dex and a keyboard and mouse. strangest thing is that my phone flipped out of my bikes phone holder landed on the road face up and was ran over by a car and had no damage other that a few tire marks. then one night i get drunk drop my phone and the screen cracks

  5. How about questioning your butterfingers and bad luck. I have the defender pro case and have dropped my phone over 100 times. Still perfect.

  6. I have the s22 ultra and I went to Walmart and bought a cheap phone holder like an idiot. I was going 50 on my ebike and it bounced out. I turned around and it was laying on the road face up. A car was coming and I tried to stop him he slowed down but didn't completely stop. He ran over my phone face up and it never cracked but you could see tire marks. Then I was drunk about a month later woke up and some how cracked my screen…..wtf

  7. Wow crazy shit I have the same exact phone with the same exact case with the same exact cracked location! With the line going across! I barely dropped my phone even with having a tempered glass protector screen on it, and still managed to have it cracked when slipped off my hand! Cheap quality and everytime I charge it the bottom part lights up

  8. I just broke my 3rd screen !! Don't know how I have never broken a phone screen in my life, after the last time I put it in a bulky otter box it still craked, I'm 62 I'm no kid and I try to take care of my phone, these are junk !!

  9. I have the 1TB model, and they didn't even give me the option to repair. They looked at replacement, but since it's the 1TB they are offering buying out the phone for a very large sum. I am looking at the Fold, but have reservations. Plus I love this phone and the camera. VERY TORN!!

  10. Exactly the same hit and crack with the same pattern of cracks and the line. But my screen remains operational fully. It looks this is the weakness of that gorilla glass.

  11. I'm looking up how to fix my screen because I had the SAME issue with the S22 Ultra. I had the Otterbox defender case AND a tempered glass installed. Pretty much MAXimum protection.

Fast forward 2 month, the phone fell out of my pocket at the gym about 2 feet and the screen cracked THROUGH the tempered glass on the left corner exactly where you have it. Same exact line across the screen.

Crap screen. Regret getting this phone.
