Upgrading my CPU to the AMD Ryzen 9 5900X (from the 2700X)

I’ve been looking forward to this upgrade for years, after finding a decent deal on eBay for an open-box CPU I finally went for it. I don’t do a lot of gaming, but I do a lot of video editing and other CPU intensive tasks.

My main channel is @BatteryPoweredBricks
you are much more likely to find me there rather than here.

The channel I am blaming for this upgrade: @NonsenseWars
This is the video that inspired this upgrade:

  1. I'm running an Intel lga 1200, on a MSI ace gold edition motherboard. Everything was working just fine till one day I went to boot up and I got a C1 error code. I just got new ddr4 ram to see if thats the issue which would suck because I had 64gb of ram and now im having to downgrade to 32gb. If that doesn't work I purchased a new MSI MPG Z590 Gaming Carbon WiFi Gaming Motherboard… I'm running the 10th gen Intel chip and if this works I may just return the motherboard. Sell the Intel chip, and see if I can get a shop to fix the msi ace gold edition motherboard. Then I'll sell that for an AMD chip and amd mobo. I have a gigabyte rtx 4080 gpu and a 1000 watt asus Thor psu. I'm waiting on a new case but my Intel chip always feels like it's running hotter than usual. I cleaned it out and put new thermal paste and that's when I got the c1 error. After swapping to just 2 ram chips I got an error code that says cannot find boot drive. But my monitor won't turn on. I got a display port cable instead of the hdmi cable hoping that might fight my screen issue. It just sucks because I have 3 m.2 drives and I honestly cannot remember which drive has my windows loaded :/

  2. Loved the video, just bought a 5900x for $275AUD a few days ago myself. MSI B450 Tomahawk with -30 undervolt and loves it with CB score of 215XX. Cooler is a Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE with max temp I've seen at 78'c (room was 26'c). Hope yours is a good undervolter as well and can highly recommend that cooler! Was about $60AUD on Ebay and it has 7 heat pipes whilst the other newer Thermal;right duel towers only have 6 😉

  3. Glad I found this video since you seem to have done the upgrade I'm looking to do. From a 2700x to a 5900x. My main reason to upgrade was UI lag when editing with a 4k file. I don't care about render times, but playback while editing is important to me. Have you been getting an UI locks when editing 4k?

  4. My old 2700x runs WAY hotter than my 5900x but the 2700x also has a Wraith Prism on it still. The Vetroo V5 cooler was intended to be a temporary cooler but it works very well so I never bothered upgrading. If I do have to tear it down for any reason it will get a bigger PSU. I would probably get a 850w PSU and a Thermalright Peerless assassin SE RGB.

  5. I run a Ryzen 9 5900x, X570, 64GB DDR4-3200 (I run virtual machines), RTX 2080 Super. I started my AM4 journey with a Ryzen 3 2200G and 8GB DDR-2400, and now that x370 board has a 2700x, 32GB DDR4-3200, and a RX 590 that I gave to my youngest daughter. My other daughter who is an adult now has a Ryzen 5 5500, 32GB DDR4-3600, and a GTX 1660 6GB.

  6. I still have my 5900x running it at 4.6ghz 1,33ish volts sometimes 1.37 for like 4.7 or 4.8ghz if i were to try it. But it's basically a 13600k. Super nice since Ive had it for a few years

  7. Nice cpu upgrade. We're the same boat. I upgraded my cpu too, from 2700 to 5900x around 2 years ago.
    I'm using asus strix x570 128gb corsair 3200mhz Amd sapphire 6800xt
    😁 Cheers!

  8. First off, Thank you for making this video. I think you may have answered my questions in the video but I want to ask just so I have more clarity. I'm a video editor who needed an upgrade to handle 4K editing within DR18. I currently have a Ryzen 7 2700 processor with Wraith Spire LED Cooler. Motherboard is the ASUS Prime B450 -Plus. I upgraded from a GTX1660 to an RTX 3060 and went from 32 GB RAM to 64GB. But my Render times are taking 25% longer and I'm seeing the same lag when editing 4K and no proxies as I had with the old GPU and less RAM. I'm thinking the processor is the problem at this point. If I bump up to the Ryzen 9 5900x should that fix the bottlenecking and make everything much more speedy? Also, will I need a different motherboard to handle the new processor? Sorry for so many questions, I just don't know enough about builds (and don't totally understand it all lol) Thank you!

  9. I went from 3900X to 5900X for $269, brand new from Microcenter, and there is an amazing difference. Your settings are not revealing it's true potential. Undervolt it. I am running all core 4.7GHz at 1.267V and my temps during Cinebench wont go about 65 C and I scored 23195. I choose to stay here as it is 24/7 safe for this chip. I can go 4.8GHz at 1.315V but that is too much and I get into the 70C range. It may be safe, but I like to be safer. When you game, you go back in the bios and just go default and use the Ryzen Master to OC a couple of cores and there I get 4.94GHz.

  10. From what I can see your cooler is sucking hot air from your rad and pulling it into your system and you only seem to have one fan in the rear for exhausts. That's why your running those temps. My 5900x clocked @ 4.4 on all cores doesn't even hit 65c at full load (video editing) with my Thermaltake 240. You need a bigger case. 🙂

  11. I would get a DeepCool AK620 CPU Air Cooler for the CPU you have, its a great cooler games such as cyberpunk runabout 53 -59 degrees Celsius. it has a big heatsink and two big fans on the cooler. I have the same CPU as you. I also upgraded from the ryzen 7 2700x that is a great cpu as well. I do have 48 gig of ddr 4 ram as well, and rtx 460 ti.

  12. powerful cpu perfect for video editors ang rendering for AM4 platform. I do suggest to shift to a aircooler. I replaced my AIO using the same cpu and the temps are better

  13. I've just bought a RYZEN 9 5900x to replace my RYZEN 5 3600xt, my AIO will be mounted better than that though so as not to kill the pump with trapped air.

  14. I use a artic freezer!! 280 on my 5900x and idle temps are around 30³C with ambiant 22³C. I did find your paste to be a bit on the sparse site. and off course having the rad to be with the hoses on the top gives a problem with air and thus much lesser cooling capacity. so maybe try to change that if possible, but seeing the 1080 being that large I think that might be a problem with the hoses. But a 5900x should definitely be running a lot cooler then you have it. R23 here was 22680 with my artic liquid freezer II 280 using the offset montage. so maybe that is something that might help.

  15. Lol the “average joe” comment near the end rlly rings true. I’d been wading through the sea of overproduced affiliate nonsense, spamming a million different keywords to try to find something authentic until I finally stumbled across this vid. And it was great!

  16. Arctic Cool 360 Nothing Gets Temps on AMD Chips Cooled Better IMO. The Videos on them Are Accurate, They also Have a VRM Fan in The Pump and it Does Work as Well . Strange How People Over look the Best Result for Other name Bran Components ! I am only Running a R 7 5700x 8 Cores 16 threads, and My CPU averages Mining on Nice Hash 50 C . I would Not Test out my Rig Bitcoin Mining, if it were Not Running So Darned Cold to Start with ! My Graphics Card is only a Gigabyte RX 5700XT Gaming OC 8 Gb ddr6, Testing I Run a UFO in all Fields including Gaming, The Only thing Maxed Out on my X570 Aorus Ultra MB is My Graphics Card , I have a lot of Upgrading To Do , But I really don't need More than UFO Ratings across The Board, LOL …

  17. Nice – I have a 2700 I may upgrade to 5900x – I also want to double my memory to motherboard max of 64gb which requires replacing all 4 of my sticks 🙁

  18. The water cooler if old will get fried with the 5900x i went from 3600 to 5900x and i instantly started having problems turn out the cpu was overheating change water cooler and fixed the problem.

  19. You didnt have a problem with installing the new CPU? I have an aorus elite x570, updated my bios where the 5000 series is compatible.. but i got boot loops… what might be the problem?…thanks

  20. I've maxed out my AM4 platform (with parts I can get/afford). from 1700X to 5900X, from X370 to Crosshair VIII X570 Dark Hero, Team Xtreem 2x32GB & an RTX 4090. After AM5 is all-matured and there will be AM6, I will do the same again. This is the best way for me (to save the money), rather than being an early adopter. Unless you have financial freedom…

  21. AM4 is a truly amazing platform . I have an ASUS x370 prime pro, and I started with a 1500x, to a 2700x, to a 3900x and now to a 5950x, all on the same motherboard! The first two were sold off, now the 3900x is my file,Plex and vm server, on a b450 board I bought used 😂
