WHY Are People Still Buying These CPUs? – AMD FX Series in 2023

Back in the early 2010’s AMD released the FX CPU lineup including the FX 6300, 8120, and 8350. So I went ahead and got all three of those CPUs to see if they’re still worth anything in 2023 and if you should consider them for your next budget build.

  1. So when the 2nd gen ryzen came out i was sorta oblivious to the fact (i just got back into building pcs after 3 years) so i had bought the amd 8350 i played on it and realized it wasn't actually that good so i sold it for 10 dollars more then i bought it to cover the selling of it so i broke even and bought the 2600x just this last year i got the 5900x

  2. I have a fx 4350 and 8370, the 8370 my brother used to break some OC record back in 2015 or so. . I looked this CPU up and its still listed as $200.00 what the actual fawk.

  3. I have found that these types of hardware become classics:
Successful products from companies that ultimately failed (3Dfx comes to mind)
Interesting products that tried something different and succeeded, but never caught on (STM's Kyro for example)
And products that failed and were conceptually flawed from the beginning, but did try something interesting (Bulldozer, Netburst)

Here in Germany you can regularly find far superior Sandy Bridge and Ivy Bridge based Intel CPUs for the same or even less money as BD based CPUs. I guess we love the underdog. Also, failure is a much better story. Everyone loves Donald Duck.

  4. Eye test the FX 9590 works as fast as my Ryzen 9 5900x in web browsing and Thinkorswim, Active Trader Pro. So in my use cases it’s still useful in 2024.

  5. I just hooked up my buddy with this cpu chip after I've had 15 years plus ago. And paired it with a msi gtx 580 4g and it's still kicking ass. I was very surprised with the outcome

  6. I had a fx 8300 with 8 gb ram and sapphire r9 380 4gb with same motherboard in this video (msi 970 gaming). This build was able satisfy my computer needs for almost 8 years. Then sadly motherboard or cpu died had to sell ram, gpu and monitor afterthat bought Lenovo Thinkpad L15 gen3 with amd ryzen 7 pro 5875u. I sometines miss my old fx gaming pc to be able to play games up to metro exodus but life changed and i dont play too much anymore. Anyway everything aside these fx cpu's were very good back in the day in price/performance. They served me well.

  7. I own all all three f x c p u's
    8150
    8350
And the king of kings, the supreme leader of leaders, the FX9590.
ACP u's in the futureare being utilized and their huge cache is being utilized in Windows 10. Finally, they can show their pure powerful performance. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤.
If you pair the proper Video card with this FX CPU.
You will get and insane smooth gaming performance.
    GTX1080TI 11G
    OR GTX1660TI 6G DDR6.
    RTX3060 12G
    GTX1060 6G DDR5
    GTX1070 8G DDR5.
HIGH END CARDS WORK BETTER FAR BETTER WITH HIGH END I9'S INTEL CPU'S WITH DDR4 4800MHZ RAM.
    AND NEWER DDR5 MOTHERBOARDS❤❤❤❤

  8. im still using my FX pc. they're using them for retro gaming purposes. because windows 11 still cant use 16-bit apps. where as FX8350 is Windows 7 and XP x86 supported with native 16-bit support. which is why im keeping my 8core. plus im super happy with fx8350 because when i built my pc in 2017 ryzen wasnt around much. and intel wasnt doing 8core cpus for a budget friendly cost. and im not a fan of intel as i always blow them up or get bottleknecked by the petty 4cores because i7 never was 8core back then either… also i would have rather bought an fx at around £185 instead of £350 for i7's 4core. kinda like the reasons why i upgraded last year to R7 5700X for the same price as the FX8350 back in 2017. also 0patch is keeping XP and W7 secured and stable… when windows 10 is dead im going back to Windows 7. but on my 5700X i'll keep it on W11 or W12. try running Windows XP on the 1800X and then try GTA or Discworld Noir. tell me if you can get them running on the ryzen. and then try some other games that was 16-bit for the Ryzen. there are no drivers for the ryzen to run XP even for a gpu later than RX400-8000 series i dont think nvidia has xp drivers for the RTX2000s either… retro gamers and businesses are also still utilizing old tech. and the fx8350 is kinda the most powerful cpu for its time during the XP era. untill the FX9590 which was a problem thermally.

  9. I would use AMD FX because 8 cores on mainstream desktop runs Windows 7 natively unlike any Ryzen processor and I know there are bulldozer 16 core Opterons and intel Haswell EP options but motherboards are too expensive

  10. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
    I have all 3.
    Fx8150 black ⚫ 🖤 ♥
    Edition.. $80 bicks.
    Gtx1660ti6GDDR6.
    TOP GUN
    FX8350 MUCH FASTER IN LOADING.
    FX9590 OUTSTANDING
    WATERS COOLED.

  11. I just gave my grandchildren my fx 8350, which is paired with a XFX 580. It still works great. Fsr is really extending the life of my radeon 580.

  12. Ryzen 1000 and 2000G are incompatible with Windows 11. Unless you will use Linux, those are e-waste 1.5y from now.

Great video BTW. The 8120 really shows how bad Bulldozer is vs Piledriver.

  13. I still use FX-8350 on PC clocked to 4,7 GHz with Cooler Master 212 Evo.
Sure I can't play all the latest games and the ones I can, I can't use all bells and whistles.

To me PC is for virtual reality, older games and indie games.
I do my gaming on Xbox Series X (and Xbox One X before that).

Still I am very impressed how FX-8350 can be as good as it is even today after so many years. Depending on the game of course.
Oh and I use Win 10, Asus GTX 1060 6GB and 24 gigs of Kingston HyperX DDR3 RAM (yeah, that RAM is overkill but it was on great sale).

Sometimes it can of course be a bottleneck and those single thread focused games which ain't the best for it but when it comes more GPU needing and/or multi threading games it still kinda rocks in my opinion.

  14. I have a Fx8350, Fx8120 and a 1100T with the 8120 being used for browsing and as a workstation on a GA-890GPA-UD3H rev 3.1 with 32gb of Kingston RAM. Considering after watching this video to put in the 1100T as I'm using the 8350 in another PC for emulation. I've always noticed the lag with the 8120. Never had a game I couldn't run with emulation PC though. Specs on those are
    Emulation PC
    Mobo: GA-78LMT-USB3 rev 6.0
    CPU: FX8350
    Cooler: Thermalright TL-E12 AM4 (modded)
    RAM: Kingston 32gb 8gb x 4 1600mhz
GPU: ASUS STRIX R9 390 OC
    PSU: Corsair RM1000
    Case: Antec Twelve Hundred V3

    Work PC
    Mobo: GA-890GPA-UD3H rev 3.1
CPU: FX8120 (changing to Phenom II 1100T)
    Cooler: Cooler Master Hyper 212
    Ram: Kingston 32gb 8gb x 4 1600mhz
    GPU: Nvidia Quadro FX 3800
    PSU: XFX 500W
    Case: Cooler Master CM 690

  15. fx 9590 is a valuable like collector's item for me. Even in 2023, it can do everything on average. It also helps me heat the house :))
I have another pc with a 7950x3d processor, I use 2 pcs daily and I am very happy with the FX 9590, it is a really good processor with the right components.

  16. 3:38 usually AM4 coolers are backwards compatible with AM3/AM2/FM1/FM2 if there using the default spring loaded latching mechanism like the AM3/AM2/FM1/FM2 uses.

  17. You know, I've heard this a lot- FX is NOT fine wine, though if I still had one I'd probably be telling myself the same story- gotta sleep somehow. I had an 8350 for a Year or 2 (hard to remember how long these Days) and eventually got a 9590 (different builds)- I immediately returned the 9590 for a 4790k since I couldn't get anything faster from AMD at the time. It blew them both away, just plain everything was significantly faster. I now have the same 4790k a decade later, accept it's at 4.8 now and it still blows away FX CPUs by the same margin, or maybe even more with the OC- this is the best value piece of hardware I've ever bought, nothing has lasted half this long, my whole system is different besides that- even the Motherboard/Memory. I'm also an AMD fanboy, before the 8350/9590 I had an Athlon x2 @ 2.8 (not sure of the model), then a Phenom 955, then 8350/9590 which felt no different from the Phenom. When I upgrade I'm going back to AMD. Really though, FX still lags behind equivalent Intel CPUs by just as much as they did back then. I'm really glad that they're still viable Today for those who have them though and they're still great for production when considering cost and if you already have one- I was a Game Dev when I had an 8350/9590 so it was not ideal since Game Performance is important for Game Dev. I am surprised to this Day that Intel made such a future-proofed product, the 4 series of CPUs are maybe the most iconic era of any CPUs ever made, they still do a really great Job, though they're finally starting to show their age- it's kinda sad, I'm a bit sentimental after having this thing for so long!

  18. I dont know why poeple like these, nostalgia? 4-6 core xeons v3 are pennies to buy and mostly double (or more) the performance of one of these. 1650 v3 is overclockable with an X99 612 chipset board. it's wise to go for something a little more modern and actual HEDT. I suppose I'd be curious as to how it would compare to my slowest V3 2650 at 3.0 all core. But I think i already know the answer to that.

  19. Interesting video. There are a few assumptions here though. Depending on what market you are in pricing can be very different. Even 1st generation Ryzen here has absolutely stupid premiums on the used market and where people are still selling Sandy Bridget i7 2600 systems for $500.

Also the part alot of people miss on the lawsuit is that a lawyer decided what is and is not a "real" multi core CPU. To claim a CPU is not a real multi core CPU because it had shared floating point units is pretty arbitrary especially 10 years ago when companies were experimenting with different designs. At worst AMD came out with an inferior design from a technical standpoint.

The 8350 especially goes for alot less because of the bad press but still is a decent option for a really budget PC and makes a bit more sense now when single core performance is less relevant than it was 10 years ago.

And if you upgraded from one from the original launch like most AMD products you didn't have to buy all new motherboards every 2 CPU releases.

You also had the whole nonsense with Intel that you had to buy specific CPUs and motherboards at a premium to even consider overclocking.

Also as others have mentioned with the Intel CPU mitigation patches for Spectre and Meltdown things have definitely gotten more interesting.

  20. Because they still get the job done, and are really cheap now, my daughter gaming still on am3 970 gaming with a fx8350 with a rtx3060ti getting over 120fps abs she beats me one to one on most games and ive got R7 5800x with a rx7800xt card.

  21. i still got my first build gaming pc in 2016 amd 8350 fx black edition
we are in 2023 still like new and playing starfield and cyberpunk with no problems
my motherboard is asrock 990fx killer and graphic card geforce gtx 1080 ti 11gb
but cant upgrade to windows 11

  23. I'd consider cobbling together a fx-6300 build for a home theatre/media pc. I'm running a think center right now that has a 3rd gen i5 3470 with 8GB of RAM. Works well for what I use it for. the 3470 i5 has a 77W tdp and the fx-6300 has a 95w tdp. I'd have to think well on it since, electricity pricing has gone up some.
