5 Starlink things I wasn't expecting!

After having Starlink for a bit there were five things I was pretty surprised about. I know its a beta program but I had some initial challenges but in the end the product has huge potential. The speeds are amazing. The drop outs can be frustrating. I think its because I’m in the lower part of the US I don’t have the coverage the upper parts of the US already have. They are launching some 60 satellites every few weeks. I expect the coverage and difficult drop outs and packet loss to go away as the network matures. This is the best proof of concept I’ve ever seen. In this video we’ll talk about in’s and outs of what challenges I’ve run into as well as some of the amazing potential thats ahead.

1. The size and weight is rather large, bigger than I was expecting from pictures online.
2. The directional view of the north is required vs the typical satellite view of the south. This has been a bit of a challenge to achieve, I think this is temporary as the network matures.
3. The coverage of the satellites overhead and where they are connecting to was a surprise to me. My connection appears to be gating through LA vs the expected Yuma station.
4. There are drop outs where there are seconds to minutes of no service throughout the day. Again I think this is a coverage issue from being so far south, I expect it too greatly improve.
5. The speeds and latency are much better than I was expecting. At times I’m 35ms to Google DNS. I’ve seen speeds up to almost 300Mbps download to about 20Mbps upload.

All in all the potential with the mobility that Elon tweeted about a few weeks ago will be a game changer for this system. Its semi-mobile today but with some firmware updates its suppose to be 100% mobile and automatic.
