How to Reset Forgotten iOS ROOT Password (Any Jailbreak/iOS)

▶ iMyFone Umate Pro can delete junk files, memory hogs and unwanted cache items to give your iPhone (or iPad) a spring-clean speed boost and get it running faster than ever.

If you’ve ever jailbroken your #iPhone, no matter on which #iOS version, you are probably aware of the little recommendation saurik put in #Cydia about the default password for the root account on the device. This password is especially important considering the OpenSSH or DropBear are installed by default and allow incoming connections to the device.

By default, on any iOS, the default password for the ROOT account is “alpine”. This is well known and therefore makes you vulnerable if you are jailbroken. A lot of people followed the Cydia guide, changed the password but forgot what they put in there as the new one. When the time came for them to sign in as root in a terminal to run whatever command that required elevated privileges, surprise, they can’t authenticate.

Changing the password on iOS for the #root account is unfortunately not as straight-forward as it may be on a web service. There is no link to click for forgotten passwords, nor any security questions you can answer. The method? Deal with the “master.passwd” file located in /etc/ and hash yourself a new password. While it might not be as easy as it was changing it the first time via the “passwd” command, once you’re done and you know your new password, you can use the “passwd” command once again to make modifications the easy way.

  1. Thank you so much. btw in your master.passwd there is hash for "alpine" string for user "mobile". It starting like /smx7MY
You can just copy it and paste to the root user

  2. Hey iDevice Central, I'm about 2 years late to this video but wondering if I could get some help. I'm unable to use iFile from Cydia, whenever it installs it goes fine but when I press the actual icon it does the open animation and then puts me right back on the home screen. Do you know how to fix this?
