Why I’m switching to Apple Maps (from Google) for cycling navigation

Logan Moy hits the streets on his electric bike to test the cycling navigation on Apple Maps and Google Maps. He compares the two based on user interface, how well they work with the iPhone and Apple Watch and the quality of routes each app provides.

  1. Apple Maps has come a long way. When it comes to walking directions, I have actually found that Apple Maps is even better. I live in a rural area and Apple Maps will actually pick up off road non-paved footpaths, whereas Google Maps will take you a round about way on roads and paved footpaths. Obviously this is not going to replace a proper walking map but I was still genuinely surprised Apple Maps was able to give the route that locals and people with an actual walking map would use.

Cycling directions for Apple Maps are not available in my area yet, but given how good the driving and walking directions have been, I am looking forward to it. Originally the updated maps were only available in a few cities like San Francisco, then it quickly rolled out to the US and it wasn't long before the whole of the UK got the new maps with even more detail than Google. I also prefer the interface in Apple Maps and I prefer the privacy. The things I would like to see improved are POI and downloadable maps.

  2. Apple fanboys are interesting. They will use any Apple knowing deep down that there is a better alternative out there. It's amazing what Apple has done to the psyche

  3. CSMapping web service allows to work on any browser (desktop/mobile). Marks in clusters, routes, weather in every mark, sharing with friends.

  4. And still no cycling in The Netherlands/belgium on Apple. That is why I still use google. The Netherlands is by default a bicycle nation and amazing in infrastructure. So apple come on already.

  5. In the Netherlands where I live there is the bike option on apple maps but if I try using it it tells me there are no bicycle routes available 😂🤣😂🤣😂😭😭😭 and whats more if I look out my bedroom window I can clearly see two different dedicated cycling paths.

  6. Google maps on android wear has a lovely live map navigation interface, I couldn't be dealing with just seeing a list view of next turns as bike lanes are often drawn around major junctions on maps, meaning a left turn may be displayed in the maps as four right turns and three left turns.

Also, not a problem generally in the US, but roundabouts/traffic circles, it's just much easier to see the right exit on a map view. I would be very interested to see a comparison of google vs apple navigation on an apple watch though, in case I were to switch to iOS in the future.

:edit: apple watch does have a map view, you just have to switch to it every time after you start navigation. And it hides your next turn, and the map only occupies part of the screen.

  7. Basically you are rich that's why you use apple map. don't worry Samsung just launch a new phone that's double in price of Apple. don't think that you use Apple and that's why you are rich
That's phone have many exciting features
