What To Do About 32-Bit Apps Before Updating To macOS Catalina (MacMost #1948)

After updating to macOS Catalina, old 32-bit apps will not longer work. If you have an old 32-bit app, then before updating, you should update your app or switch to a new one. Most apps have newer versions that professionals should consider buying. If you are using the app for casual purposes, then consider getting a modern alternative to apps like Microsoft Word or Adobe Photoshop. These will be cheaper or free, and will probably be much better than using an old outdated pro app. You can also keep an old Mac around to run 32-bit apps. Experts can partition their drive, use an external drive, or a virtual machine to run Mojave or earlier in some situations.

  1. Thanks for all you do Gary. I’m transitioning to a hand me down iMac with Catalina. When I go to the App Store it shows my pages in the cloud but won’t let me load it…any way around this? OR, is there another simple app to use instead? Thank you!

  2. If you are trying to play Steam games on your Mac there is a way to fix this. Go to your game, right click on the game and go to properties, then go to BETA and it should select the 64 bit version

  3. As long as they're not hardware associated with the app (or in certain cases even if there is) you can simply run an older version of macOS (like OS X El Cap) in a Virtual Machine. You can even run a VM for free in Oracle VirtualBox.

  4. Do you have any video on how to downgrade to Mojave? I am curious to know if I set my iMac to factory settings, whether it will be again with Mojave or Catalina… Anyone any idea?

  5. i spent a lot off money on my studio record best coputer stupid imac best camera best sound card in the end i fucked up with this catalina my pro tools doesn't open anymore

  6. I use EyeTV to record broadcast TV shows from an Over The Air (OTA) Antenna – Is there a replacement product with a TV Tuner from another vendor? And, I use PS Elements 12 – Do you know if Elements 2020 is similar and 64-bit? Thanks!

  7. Hello! Is there some app that can scan my mac to get list of apps will not work in catalina? I mean a tool that will scan my mac and see what apps are installed, and then give me a full list of all apps that WON'T work if I "upgrade" to Catalina? That would help everyone decide, on the spot, about whether they should make the change or not.

  8. i should warn my employer about this! at my work environment, we're still using adobe master collection cs4, and that means everything but Photoshop is 32-bit… OUCH!

  9. The best solution is for Mac users to stick to Mojave. It’s ridiculous that Apple decided to ditch 32-bit plugin bridges in Catalina. It doesn’t make sense at all. The way Apple are going, they’re bound to go out of business.

  10. System Information show literally two full pages of 32 bit apps. There are many that are familiar like Adobe or MSOffce etc that I recognize as apps I've purchased but many list "Obtained From" as "unknown". Many have names that just sound technical so I don't know what they do or if they are important for something else. Then there is the question of whether uninstalling requires deleting more files than just the app. This really seems like a nightmare.

  11. apple is fucking us all for their tv, games. I lost my a lot of apps like microsoft word, final cut pro. my mac is useless now. bullshit. I am mad and done with apple.

  12. Hey. I just installed macOS Cataline and I can no longer open my free downloaded version of Photoshop CS6. Does anyone know where I can get a 64bit free copy from? Thank you.

  13. The worst of all is, that Apple is still selling 32bit apps on their own Appstore, basically ripping people off because there's no warning before buying .

  14. yeah, well you concentrate on apps and not on drivers, i.e. printer drivers. for example you have a laser printer you have for the last 10 years, what'd you gonna go, throw it away a buy a new one? that'd be stupid. i would never upgrade a software just to be 64 bit and having to change all my hardware.

  15. another option that you can do is stick with mojave and then get 3rd party apps that will bring catalina features to mojave.

    for example(s)

sidecar a feature not in mojave but in catalina it is possible that someone will write a driver or an application to give you sidecar features in mojave by

    1. extending the desktop to ipad there are already programs though slow as they are not native and have to do like obs does then compress the video and send it to the ipad there are even apps that can turn your ipad into a mouse, keyboard, remote or even a wacom tablet

    2. wired or wireless it can do it over wifi or via usb cable.

    screen time

there are already apps and drivers that provide parent controls and can schedule shutdowns

    dedicated system volume.

it is possible to to make the system read only by.

    1. making a hard drive install think it is a live cd via some hacks and move your user files to a separate partition along with the swap files for virtual memory

    2. extended gatekeeper it is possible for 3rd party security apps to subscribe to a security list and do some of the same thing

    3. activation lock there are some 3rd party programs that can do in software mode a similar function.

    and so on

  16. I'm sure that this is a question you hear often: my iMac is from late 2013; surely more recent iterations of macOS are more likely to be optimised for the current machines. If so my Mac may suffer if I upgrade. Is that likely to be the case? Great video as usual, thanks.

  17. The only 32 bit app I don't want to part with is JumpCut. Its the best clipboard app Ive ever used. I've tried several others but they are way over done and bloated. I just need a decent replacement.
