We announced the next-generation video coding standard “H.266/Versatile Video Coding (VVC)”. Compared to the current format H.265 adopted by the current iPhone, the file size of the movie is about half.

With H.266, the file size can be compressed to about half of H.265.

The Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute of Communication Technology (HHI) in Germany announced H.266/Versatile Video Coding (VVC) as the next-generation video coding standard on July 7, local time.

The main feature of H.266 is high compression efficiency. Video that requires 10GB with H.265 compatible with iPhone etc. can be compressed to half, 5GB, without sacrificing image quality.

In addition, H.266 was developed assuming high resolutions of 4K and 8K, and is also expected to be used for 360-degree panoramic video distribution.

Supports H.265 on iOS 11

The current mainstream, H.265, was officially approved in 2013. Apple supported H.265 on the iPhone 6/6 Plus released in 2014, but iOS supported iOS 11 released in 2017.

Final Cut Pro X plug-in developer Alex Gornner tweeted that H.266 would be in widespread use around 2027-2028.

With the adoption of H.266, it is expected that the storage capacity will be less likely to be overwhelmed even when shooting high-quality video on an iPhone.
