Apple M1 MacBook Air/Pro supports self-service repair, but cannot upgrade the configuration

Apple recently expanded its self-repair program with the addition of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with the M1 chip, allowing users to replace the screen, battery, and even the motherboard themselves. Don’t expect to be able to upgrade your laptop, though, as you can only get the exact same motherboard from Apple that the device originally came with, 9to5Mac reports.

Apple M1 MacBook Air/Pro supports self-service repair, but cannot upgrade the configuration

On the official self-repair page, users must enter their MacBook’s serial number before they can search or purchase replacement parts. This helps ensure that Apple supplies the right parts, but it also means users can’t buy motherboards with more memory and storage.

Members of Apple’s self-repair support team said that the parts you buy must match the original configuration of the device, or you may encounter problems and be unable to complete the self-repair. Additionally, if the user manages to order a part that does not match the original configuration, the order will fail the order verification process. The order will be cancelled and the user will not be charged.

For some MacBook devices, after entering the serial number, the search tool asks the user to select the GPU, RAM, and SSD their device is configured with, with a reminder: “Your selection must match the original configuration of your device, or you may Encountered a problem and cannot complete the repair.” The page also links to a guide on how to find the exact specs of the device.
