IT House reported on March 26 that Magnet Forensics recently issued an announcement announcing that the GrayKey box now supports cracking iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro models, as well as any iPhone model running iOS 17.
GrayKey box is a specialized iPhone cracking tool, mainly used by law enforcement agencies in various countries, specifically used to crack and access locked iPhones and Apple-related devices.
IT House reported in 2018 that the U.S. State Department purchased the equipment at a cost of US$15,000. The device can be connected to up to two iOS devices at the same time. The time to crack depends on the length of the password. A four-digit password may take several hours to crack, and a six-digit password may take several days.
The GrayKey box was previously limited to cracking iOS 17 and below models, but now Magnet Forensics has announced that it has successfully cracked iOS 17 models. In addition, the company also said it can crack the locked Samsung Galaxy S24 series models, as well as Pixel 6/7 series of mobile phones.
In a post on the company’s blog, Magnet said it is “very pleased to announce that Magnet GrayKey supports the latest Apple iOS and Android devices, including those running iOS 17.”
Approximately 1.46 billion people around the world use iPhone, accounting for approximately 18% of the total number of smartphone users. Apple reports that 66% of iOS devices (iPhones and iPads) are running iOS 17 as of February 4, 2024, and that number jumps to 76% of devices launched in the past four years.
