Apple iOS 17.4 brings 15W wireless charging function using Qi2 standard to iPhone 12

According to the latest report from Macworld, iOS 17.4 brings 15W wireless charging to the iPhone 12 using the Qi2 standard.

Apple iOS 17.4 brings 15W wireless charging function using Qi2 standard to iPhone 12

Qi2 is the next generation wireless charging technology designed by the Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and is based on MagSafe technology. MagSafe debuted on iPhone 12, offering charging speeds of up to 15W. However, third-party wireless chargers that are not MagSafe certified can only provide charging speeds of up to 7.5W, while Qi2 can achieve the full 15W of power.

Last year, Apple added the function of 15W charging using Qi2 wireless chargers to iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 through the iOS 17.2 update, and the iPhone 15 series natively supported the Qi2 standard when it was released. This makes the iPhone 12 the only iPhone model to support MagSafe but not enjoy faster charging when using Qi2 accessories.

Citing user feedback and self-test results, Macworld said that when the iPhone 12 is updated to iOS 17.4, it can achieve a 15W charging speed using a Qi2 wireless charger. At this point, the device displays the same animation as 15W charging, and testing using the Anker Qi2 MagGo wireless charger also achieved similar charging speeds to MagSafe.

Apple officials have claimed that iOS 17.2 adds Qi2 support to iPhone 13 and iPhone 14, but have not made similar statements for iOS 17.4 and iPhone 12. This may be because the iPhone 12’s wireless charging technology is based on the original Qi standard and MagSafe design, and the Qi2 standard was not yet finalized at that time.
