iPhone HEIC photo format “Crash”: Student failed exam due to uploading problem

In today’s news, according to The Verge report, the AP test taken by American high school students contains written test content, and the test requires students to take and upload photos of their written test.

However, some high school students who use the iPhone to upload photos have encountered problems in the HEIC format. The HEIC format file failed to upload and eventually failed the student exam. Now thousands of students need to take the AP exam again.

The University Council has provided students with clear instructions on how to convert HEIC images to JPEG. The following is the method announced by the University Committee:

Open the settings app, scroll down to “Camera” and tap it, click on the format option and select “Most compatible”. After selecting the “Most Compatible” option, photos will always be saved as JPEG instead of HEIC file format.

In addition, students who have saved the test photos as HEIC can post the photos to themselves by using the “Mail” application on the “iPhone” or “iPad” to convert the photos to JPEG. This method of the American University Council is also suitable for regular users.

Since the release of iOS 11 in 2017, Apple has been using the HEIC image format. Although HEIC images are smaller than JPEG, the HEIC format has not been widely adopted by websites and Internet services. Some newer Android smartphones currently use the HEIC format.
