iOS 16 will bring more privacy features by expanding iCloud Private Relay

iCloud Private Relay in iOS 16

iOS 16 has all the leaks and rumors at your fingertips in recent weeks. As time runs out until WWDC22 arrives, we’re seeing all the news of the Big Apple’s new OS. In this case, the latest reports suggest that iCloud Private Relay (or iCloud Private Relay in Spanish) will expand its capabilities throughout iOS 16 to bring better user privacy across the operating system. It’s likely that the feature will no longer be in “beta” mode, as it’s now in iOS 15 to make way for a final release with important news in iOS 16.

iCloud Private Relay Explained

iCloud Private Relay will expand its capabilities in iOS 16

The key operation of iCloud Private Relay is based on our connection bouncing from two different servers. With this bounce, the aim is to hide the IP and DNS records we connect to external websites. Currently, iOS 15 has the system in beta with the iCloud+ subscription included in the iCloud plan. Still, iCloud Private Relay only works with Safari.

According to a report released by the agency Digital Day, Apple may consider extending iCloud Private Relay to all iOS 16 connections. That is, all Internet connections leaving our iDevice will be relayed from iCloud via rebounds: 3rd party apps, 3rd party services, browsers other than Safari, etc. This means a very important change, as many tracking companies make money from information related to our IP and other types of content they can extract from connections.

However, this is an important step in improving user privacy on the web. Additionally, some new features are expected to appear in so-called iCloud Private Relay bundles that go beyond connectivity. Let’s remember that in this bundle there is also the “Hide Mail” option, which Apple uses to generate random emails that redirect to our main email, among other features. These will be a step forward in iOS 16 by improving user security.
