Korean media The Elec reported that Samsung Display has begun negotiations with ULVAC to purchase vacuum-film deposition equipment for the start of production of 8.5th generation (2,200mm x 2,500mm) organic EL (OLED) displays. It is rumored that the iPad Pro (2024) will be equipped with the same display.

Rumors that iPad Pro and MacBook will be installed in 2024

According to The Elec, Samsung Display and ULVAC have developed the industry’s first vertical vacuum deposition equipment for the manufacture of 8.5th generation OLED displays.

It is rumored that Apple plans to install OLED displays on iPad Pros and MacBooks, and these products with display sizes of 10 inches or more are more economical than the 6th generation (1,500 mm x 1,850 mm). The excellent 8.5th generation OLED display is expected to be adopted.

There is a big difference between the asking price and the desired price

ULVAC seems to offer 700 billion won (about 73.4 billion yen) to 800 billion won (about 84 billion yen) regarding the price of vertical vacuum deposition equipment for manufacturing 8.5th generation OLED displays, but this is the existing one. It is 40% to 60% higher than the price of 500 billion won (about 52.5 billion yen) for vacuum vapor deposition equipment.

On the other hand, the suggested price of Samsung Display is 400 billion won (about 42 billion yen), which seems to be a big gap between the two companies.

Samsung Display is expected to decide to invest in 8.5th generation OLED displays by the end of July 2022.
