GitHub Accounts Under Attack | Tim Cook Advice for Successful People | Why Mentorship is Important

Last week Okta announced a security breach that involved an attacker gaining access to its source code hosted in GitHub. That’s just the latest example in a long string of attacks gaining access to company source code in GitHub. Dropbox, Gentoo Linux, and Microsoft have all had their GitHub accounts targeted before.

With 90 million active users, GitHub is the most popular source code management tool for open-source and private enterprise code repositories. It’s a major piece of fundamental infrastructure and the keeper of some of the most sensitive assets and data in the world.
It’s no wonder that attackers are increasingly going after source code. In some cases, such as Okta, they might be trying to gain access to the source code. More often, the attackers are looking for sensitive information to use in a subsequent attack.

An interviewer asked Cook what he believed to be three key points for personal success to pass on to young people in India. Cook’s response: “Do what you love, and put your whole heart into it, and then just have fun.”

Tim Cook understands this deep down. “My advice to all of you is, don’t work for money — it will wear out fast, or you’ll never make enough and you will never be happy, one or the other,” Cook once told students at The University of Glasgow.

While money is certainly important, he meant that we choose work and a career that aligns with our sense of purpose and mission in life. Money serves a greater cause: to make the world a better place.

Mentoring allows people to learn from one another, providing a path to knowledge transfer. In the workplace, for instance, someone established in their career can share knowledge and insights, as well as offer guidance, to someone with less experience.

A formal mentoring program is a structured, often one-to-one relationship in a work, organization, or academic setting. Mentoring allows people to learn from one another, providing a path to skill and knowledge transfer. Impactful mentoring programs train mentors and mentees to have productive conversations and meetings, providing them with career development tools and resources to accomplish set mentorship goals.
