M1 PRO & MAX BENCHMARKS: What We Expected?



Benchmark results for Apple’s new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips have appeared on Geekbench. What can we learn from these early results? Should we trust them? What will M1 Pro & Max CPU and GPU performance be like? Can the M1 Max 32-core GPU really compete with RTX 3080?

  2. As always a comprehensive and fair review! A rule of thumb I use to address the issue of “future proof” a laptop computer is try and not exceed 50% of its performance. IMO when you can’t up grade a laptop it is vital to give yourself extra margin. I keep laptops for 4-6 years and feel it works well. Desktops and upgradeable laptops you can go with less margin. If you trade your laptop every 2 years you can get by with less margin also. Is there a better way to to address “future proofing”?

  3. I heard that it may also be power related. The 16’ Max will have a high power mode and that is there for a specific reason. I think when using that high power mode we will see scores higher and closer to the values we expected. The 14” uses a smaller power supply with a max of 96 watts. The 16” has a bigger power supply and may be able to push the chip harder.

  4. GREAT WORK – however, I would like to see how you connect these new computers to two 4k monitors and turn on, for example, capture one or photoshop with files about 42Mpx and compare it to other macbboków (temperature, fans)

  6. The M1 is the most exciting thing Apple has done since Jobs died to me but Im one of those strange ppl who need more than one port type on their laptop, so are they going to put them on the next Air update or do only 'Pro's' need ports in Apple's version of reality?

  7. Video editing performance comparison would be great. M1 vs m1 pro vs m1 max with Premiere and Resolve. Final Cut already runs great on M1 and probably not necessary to upgrade to m1pro for it.

  8. I would like to see video editing speeds in cross platform applications using a couple of different windows machines against the new MacBooks using the same video project…

  9. Really great to here you've order this variety of set ups for the macs! I'm carving for a Blender test on those different configurations, as I really ask my self if I need the M1 Max chip or if the M1 pro chip would allready be enough.

  10. Side note, my main computer is a 2017 iMac Pro w/ Radeon Pro Vega 64 graphics card. I ran Geekbench 5's OpenCL compute on it to see how it compared to the numbers you flashed up on this video and was surprised to see that I only had a score of 58,582. I'd have expected this desktop grade GPU (albeit a few years old) to still outperform the M1 P/M but maybe not?

  11. Lovely overview of how to think about the M1 Pro/Max performance (or just performance in general). One thing you didn't hit in this video but I'd love to see discussed is the impact of RAM versus GPU on performance in different categories of compute. I have a 24 core MAX with 64gb of RAM on its way but I was a little uncertain where my $$$'s were best spent on between cores and RAM.

  12. Why does no one mention the M1 Max has a larger shared cache. When the CPU looks for a piece of data and it is not in the cache its called a cache miss, cache misses hurt performance. I reckon most CPU tests would benfit more from fewer cache misses than increased memory bandwidth. Hence why the M1 max has slightly better CPU performance
