M1 Max 14-inch MacBook Pro Battery Performance | Low Power Mode

The M1 Max 14-Inch MacBook Pro battery performance in low power mode may help in certain workflows, but are you really going to get all day usage out of this MacBook Pro?

The take home message here with this 14-inch MacBook Pro review is that it depends on your work environment (the actual environment), what you’re working on, are you taking break in between, are you using other peripherals, and are those efficiency cores able to keep up?

Full Disclaimer: These were very light days of use when considering my typical creative days. You might get half of what I got, which is why I made that recommendation in the video.

  1. I recently bought a 14 inch M1 Pro with 10 core cpu and felt battery was a bit bad but Low power mode can give me up to 12 hours and doesn’t sacrifice that much performance

  2. Exactly what I’m looking for! It’s understandable that 14 inch M1 Max last shorter when you really have to push it, but it definitely matters more when it’s handling light load as a laptop, as that’s the key of paying for a MacBook Pro instead of a combo of MacBook Air+Mac Studio

  3. Very helpful video, in my documentary production class they talked about running on externals, but all there methods of file organization and reasoning behind running externals were way over our heads. Left star dazed I found your video and kind of regretted going to my tech for video pro work. Your tutorials help immensely and are a lot more clear to understand and concise in my mind.

  4. Thank you! Thank you. Thank you. Using not too much a load, with brightness I don't need a candle to see the screen, I get roughly 8 hours life. Reboots and software loads on our 16 inch M1 Max's are at best 10% faster than our 9 year old MacBook Pros (with SSD). Apple have way overhyped the capability of these machines. And as you noted, they weren't cheap. I suspect now the real reason Apple left Intel, wasn't breakthrough speed or battery life, because for sure it isn't, but that Apple wanted the processor margin $ they were paying to Intel.

  5. Hello, I have a question because I do not know if it is worth buying the 14-inch macbook pro with m1 max? For portability, performance, although my question comes in the battery, is it very bad? taking into account that I am going to choose the m1 max for video editing especially

  6. I am on a 14" M1 Max w/ 24c gpu, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd using low power mode. I am sitting here after using my laptop for web browsing, installing Affinity Photo, software development (VSCode: Go, Angular) and it's been 4 hours and at 73% battery.

I am testing it in low power mode to see how long it will go. I tweaked other settings and wrote a script to alert me when the Mac gets in <30% battery.

Maybe you could try out some portable power banks (Anker, etc), Be nice to see how those aid in keeping the M1 Max humming along while out and about. I suspect the memory bandwidth of 400 GB/s is part of the power drain.

  7. I just received my MBP, M1 Max, 32GB and 1TB ssd. I cannot tell if something is wrong with my device, but i'm getting very disappointing battery life! Even when browsing the internet my battery is dropping like crazy. I'm getting around 3-4 hours doing very light work (and not many apps opened). Honestly what could I do to fix this, because for the amount of money, even my 2015 Macbook Air will beat this battery life….?

  8. Iam on a MB 16 M1 MAX and i did recognize about 30% battery life improvement when in Low Power Mode, but u will get about 30% less performance. But have in mind the M1 Max have so much power, that u will not recognize these on normal usage.

  9. Great practical review Kevin. Many thanks
Will upgrade to M1 Max 24c GPU: 2 media engines & sweet spot.
16’’ for screen & battery; 32GB for my multitasking; 4TB for fastest & internal SSD. Greetings 🇨🇭

  10. I have a base model 16 inch mbp. I took this to work. Powered it on. Opened one safari tab and left it loaded on screen. This tab had our fleet of trucks. So it was our gps landing page that refreshed a couple times a minute. Additionally, I had a bt mouse connected. Absolutely nothing else was going on. Nothing else running in the background. I just wanted one screen for this gps page. Battery lasted me 7 hours. Almost exactly 7 hours. Did this 3 days in a row with same performance. I’m not happy with these results. 7 hours is no where near what apple touted.

  11. Great one, but little confusing, I have iMac 5K 2014 and it is not getting any OS update and I decided to upgrade my system. I did ordered exactly same as your 14" but now I am about to cancel my order.

  12. Alright you beautiful humans. Is this information a little confusing? Maybe. But it’s what I’ve found. The take home message is that if you’re using this for heavy workloads, budget for just a few hours if we’re really being realistic.
