Install Windows on Mac without Boot Camp Assistant [NO USB OR CD]

This video will show you how to get Windows on your Mac without using a USB or CD to install it. This method is better for older Macs that cannot use the ISO file straight from the computer. Enjoy!

Note: This may not work on newer Mac OS versions sorry if it doesn’t. There have been some large changes since this video was uploaded so I would look for different newer methods if this doesn’t work. 🙂

– Commands –
• sudo chmod 777 /dev/disk0s4
• sudo VBoxManage internalcommands createrawvmdk -rawdisk /dev/disk0 -filename bootcamp.vmdk -partitions 4
• sudo chown $USER bootcamp*.vmdk
• ./enable.sh
Note that you will need to change the ‘4’ to the partition that is the Windows partition, to find out which one that is run the command ‘diskutil list’. Where the zero is that is the drive number, where the ‘4’ is that is your partition number (sections/sectors of your drive).

  1. Your video is very good but I get an error in rEFIT because it is a 32-bit application but I use macos catalina which must be 64-bit to use and I get an error in formatting to NTFS but it says ''Windows can't be installed in drive 0 partition 4 (show details)" and the detail gives the error message "The selected disk is of the GPT partition style'' so I can't install it

  2. hey man 5 years later and im trying this. at the format in disk utility i dont have the other options, only the MS-DOS(FAT) and that’s it how do i get the windows options?

  4. Hello, can you please help me. Whenever I input this command "sudo VBoxManage internalcommands createrawvmdk -rawdisk /dev/disk0 -filename bootcamp.vmdk -partitions 4 " it says "VERR_ACCESS_DENIED". Even though after I input the " sudo chmod 777 /dev/disk0s4" command.

  5. Hello,

I have 2 errors coming up.

    1. At the move files from home folder to virtual machine, i DONOT have the second file created – bootcamp-pt.vmdk. the other file bootcamp.vmdk is there.

    2. After running the VM, once it reaches where you want to install windows, i only has drive 0 unallocated space 519gb shown and format option is not enabled. When i select next, it comes back with error – this computer hardware maynot be supporting booting to this disk. Ensure that the disk's controller is enabled in the BIOS menu

Can you please advise what i should do to fix this?

    Many thanks

  6. I keep on getting an error: (I'm on macOS High Sierra 1.13.6)
VBoxManage: error: Cannot open the raw disk '/dev/disk0': VERR_ACCESS_DENIED
VBoxManage: error: The raw disk vmdk file was not created

  7. Hi mate, I know this is 3 years old but maybe you check the comments once in a while. I followed the guide but when formating the partition in Virtualbox I get an error saying: "The selected disk is of the GPT partitionstyle". How can I overcome this?
