Apple’s Studio Display – Invest in YOU!

#apple #display #applestudiodisplay

Apple’s Studio Display is the clear winner for me when it comes to being the most important bit of kit I’ve bought over the past 24 months…and I’ve bought a lot of kit!

In that time I’ve added an M1 Max MacBook Pro, an M2 MacBook Air, AirPods Pro & Max, the iPhone 15 Pro Max and the M3 iMac to the collection – yet still the Studio Display is the winner.

We’ll cover the good – and there is a lot of good, the things that are not so good and even the bits that annoy me. Then we’ll discuss the true value of the Studio Display and what it can bring to your working life. I’ve been wanting to make this video for some time – there is a lot I want to cover.

Thank you for another great week for the channel last week – let’s shoot for 5000 subs by the end of 2023!

Subscribing, liking and sharing is TRULY appreciated and goes a long way to helping the channel grow 🙏🏻

  1. Amazing video David. I completely agree and no matter how many times I have tried to think of my studio display as too expensive, I haven't been able to sell it (even at a profit). I have tried so many displays and I just can't make the switch. This by far was a GREAT investment. Probably the best investment I have made as well in tech. I agree with the camera as well but it hasn't bothered me at all. Would have been a nice to have. Still better than any other camera on any display… But not the current macbook or imac level, specially on the 5k display, it doesn't look that great. Edit: Please please please don't change your opinions or change your videos to address the commenters that disagree with you and your feelings as your channel grows. You are special because you are offering yourself and you should continue to have the tech cater to YOU and not your viewers. Otherwise its not your review but just a make everyone happy video like 99% of reviews. Your production is fantastic, pace is fantastic. I loved everything about this video. Even if the mainstream doesn't, there will be more than enough people to enjoy your content and more importantly, the ones that matter. (they are also the ones willing to spend money and act to support their beliefs rather than just speak). You have done the perfect amount of research and I am no one to judge your videos in terms of a critic. But neither is anyone else. You're no one to review the product. But neither is anyone else. That's the summary.

  2. Sorry this monitor is completely overpriced. Old display tech, 60 hz, you name it, if the price was much lower, then and only then i would buy it.

  3. The standard display is currently on sale in USA at BH and Microcenter for $1499 – which means you can nap an open box for around $1300 which makes it a very interesting investment.

  4. I've been a Mac user for a long time and have used many different displays with them (Apple, HP, Dell, Viewsonic, Samsung). Out of all those, the only ones I've ever really been satisfied with were the Apple ones. Right out of the box, everything is right—color profile, saturation, sharpness, contrast, seamless connectivity, quality. I just replaced an old Apple Cinema Display with an Apple Studio Display, and for me, it's DEFINITELY worth the money. And yes, there's a clear difference in small text readability with the 5k over 4k. Thanks for the video! Subscribed.

  5. I totally agree And it should’ve been height taught and swivel adjustable display. It would make it more worth buying, but maybe in the next generation then may have that if they listen to us the consumers cause you’re not only a tech channel, but you’re also a consumer of these products from them and hi I’m a new subscriber to your channel and I’m definitely thinking of investing in one for college University and Work life and just general entertainment and video making as I’ve got a channel myself.

  6. Hi, I'm curious about using the iPhone 15 as the camera. Continuity camera might mitigate the poor quality of the in-buiit webcam – I haven't tried it myself

  7. New subscriber here! Question, is it possible to use the Studio Display as a second monitor for my new iMac M3? I have had my 2017 iMac for 7 years and love the 27” display. Please advise how to setup the Studio Display to iMac 3. Hopefully it is as simple as using a single thunderbolt cable, but after searching it is getting confusing as some say that it requires an adapter or docking station. Thank you and love your channel

  8. Thank you for your review! 😊 But please clean your AirPods Pro before recording them next time on video. They are dirty and that is really nasty. 😱😎

  9. @David Lewis Just subscribed. I enjoy your videos. Thank you for your informative and enjoyable content. May I ask if Apple will be launching the M3 Mac Mini in January as you stated in this video? I can't make up my mind whether to get a Mac Mini with Studio Display or an M3 iMac. Is there much difference in t6he viewing experience between the M3 iMac Display and the Studio Display?

  10. this video quality and the color in this video is absurdly good, man i dont wanna toss 14 pro max just for 1 gen upgrade but damn…

  11. The Studio Display is an iMac without the CPU inside. It wouldn’t be too hard for Apple to adapt the chassis to a true all-in-one. But, sadly, they won’t…

  12. I’ve paused this video to address the issue of the lighting cable. As a commercial driver and general abuser of tech, I love the advantage of the lighting cable and port. You can insert it blindly while driving. You can snot all over it, wipe it on your jeans and stuff it back in. It’s theoretically crush-proof. Did I say BLIND BI-DIRECTIONAL INSERTION?😅 So, for certain applications it still has benefits and this individual will be sorry to see it go. To close, I think for this particular application it’s perfectly suited. But c’mon Apple… that port on the mouse?

  13. Great video. Legitimate reasons given for the purchase of the display. For some people, PRICE will always be a disqualifying factor for Apple products. All you can do is exactly what you did. Expand your viewers knowledge about potential benefits and encourage others to invest in themselves when the outcome might be a better value than investing in something cheaper.

  14. It’s a busy time of the year with social and other EOY activity. Livestream is a decent idea but not in late December. Do it in January.

  15. I’ve been on Apple phone/mac for 15 years, but this is a product that’s mostly a discontinued iMac without the computer behind it. The next (M4) iMac iteration(s) holds much more interest, so I’m upgrading my 2017 5k iMac to tide me over until such time it becomes available.

I realize we all have our own needs and workflows, but the all-in-one attraction of the iMac has never faded for me.

  16. Well, let me see if, we put the high price away and to the side and then decide to evaluate Apple's 27-inch "Studio Display" only on its "value", what do we get? You make some very nice comments. I am still using a 2010, Apple 27-inch Cinema LED (none thunderbolt) display paired with a "space gray" trash can sized Mac Pro 8-core/D-700/64GB/2TB SSD model and everything is working great together. In the year 2030, with good care this display may still be operating like new. However, if buying today, I would pass on the "Studio Display" and just pick-up an Apple 32-inch XDR 6K Display. Not looking at price, to me it provides the best value (smile…smile).

  17. All the benefits are fair but it’s nothing new and this display is essentially the same as the 2014 5k iMac which was £1700 to start. No new technology and the MacBook Pro is a better display. Spending 1500 for a 10 year old display that’s been repackaged is just frustrating. Especially if you own a 5k iMac. Don’t care about the extra peripherals. Value is still poor, I agree it’s hard to move from a retina but you are paying a bonkers premium for it.

  18. Right there with you. This year I picked up a ridiculously cheap ($800CDN) M2 13” MacBook Air; someone I know purchased it, didn’t even take it out of the box and was going to return it, but said I could have it if I wanted for only $800. It was just the base model MacBook Air, but those go for $1,449 CDN, and much to my surprise, he had also paid $99 for the yearly AppleCare. All of this for $800, I just couldn’t say no! When coupled with the tax, I saved essentially 50% of the asking price. I decided this would be my day-to-day machine to tackle office-related tasks and it’s been perfect for that.

In 2023 I also picked up the AirPods Pro 2 alongside my new iPhone 15 Pro Max, Apple Watch Series 9, and just last week ordered the fully spec'd out M3 iMac that we were chatting about yesterday, but sadly that one will only arrive January 3rd. Much like you said, I don’t regret any of these purchases.

I figure since the MacBook Air I got supports “One external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz” according to Apple I could use it, but just haven’t gotten around to it. I figure by the end of summer 2024 if there haven’t been any new displays announced I might go ahead and spring for one just to give my eyes a break while at work. Everyone here uses PCs with two monitors, but I would much prefer to continue to use my MacBook Air and a Studio Display.

    Keep up the great work!

  19. I finally got around to finishing the video. Linus Sebastian of Linus Tech Tips proved the Apple Studio Display cable can be removed. He did it the ignorant way, but you can likely find a tool on the Internet to help you yank that cable out. Not that you'd want to. Requires a bit of brute force and leverage. Feels kinda wrong honestly. But once you do have that cable out…

You can probably find some third-party replacements that are basically the Studio Display connector with an IEC 60320-compliant C13 connector for a C14 to mains cable to attach with if you do not feel like splicing in your own interconnect which would likely be too damn big anyway. If C14 is too big, C6 should work if you can find a Studio Display to C5 adapter. You'd likely need to have this be some 3D-printed one-off made in some guy's basement through Etsy — that's what Torque Test Channel does with their weird and wondrous experiments making power tools use batteries from competing brands.

  20. Thanks for this video, I was looking at buying one of these displays myself but I think after the money Apple has out of me this year it will have to wait until the end of January , So far Apple had my money or the M3 iMac , The MacBook Air M2 and the MacBook Pro M3 Pro chip along with the Apple watch series 8 and the iPhone 15 Pro Max I absolutely love my apple tech but yeah definitely want the studio display next – great video as always keep ups the good work 👍

  21. You might have been a bit to far away when you did the QuickTime test as the sound sounded a bit echoing. Something I do not experience when I am doing screen recordings of my 16 inch M1 Pro. Have you tried comparing the quality of the build MacBook mic and the studio display from you normal working portion

  22. I found my studio monitor made all my photos look good, looked at them on a different monitor and found some were actually out of focus and mushy……. Quickly swapped out the studio for an asus 32” and am much happier

  23. Everything you say about the Studio Display is correct. But… it’s an entry level iMac without:
    Motherboard
    Processor
    Graphics card
    RAM
    Hard drive
    Keyboard
    Mouse

All that hardware is missing, but the price is only $200 less than the entry level 27iMac used to start at.

Here is where Apple are losing the iMac market they used to serve. Here is where Apple don’t get why so many people are not upgrading their Intel based iMacs.

Where is a the combination deal for a Studio Display, Mac mini, keyboard and mouse, for $1800? Apple silicone is cheaper to manufacture than the old Intel hardware. The old entry iMac was already a high markup product.

The problem is that Apple expect the old customers to either opt for a lot less in the 23.5 inch iMac or pay MUCH more to remain working on a 27inch display setup.

So the old 27inch iMac remains. No spend at all.

The value that used to bring in many has gone, and if you look carefully across the entire line of Apple products, the overall value is on a declining trend. Often times, functionality is lower as well. The iPhone 15 Pro Max for example, is now more a 1 camera phone than the 12/13/14 ever were. None of them have a camera system as useful as the 11 Pro Max.

  24. I do invest in me, but I also prefer to invest in others. I buy things that I can fix with relative ease from companies that don't talk out of their arse green-washing wasteful hardware handling practises and not trying to underpay people in developing countries. Genuinely, I cannot give Apple money even if it was the cheaper option on these two fronts alone and it took legal arm-twisting to make Apple change a little bit.

Be thankful and indebted to the EU — they're enabling consumer choice and making your ability to extend the useful life of Apple's mobile devices in 2027 a possibility.

  25. I am using a 4K BenQ monitor running at 2560*1440. Text looks sharp, size of text is absolutely fine, and colors look like Macbook Pro M1 due to the mac mode available on my BenQ. You have a power off button which isn't available on Studio display, a hot key puck to change modes and brightness. After using this display i don't see a point spending so much money on studio display. This model is absolutely fine for making content. Also, keep in mind that the studio has only 1 input port and god forbid something happens to that port, your entire 1600$ monitor will be rendered useless. At least for this price, we deserve pro motion and HDR in studio display.
