This week we test two Teslas side by side for their accuracy after the latest software update has finally enabled vision based parking sensors for all Tesla Model 3 and Y’s built after October 2022. The update is now rolling out and owners are providing mixed reviews as far as its function and capabilities in this early stage. Last October, Tesla announced it would stop producing ultrasonics sensors on its Model 3 and Y and recently did the same for all Model S and X’s. The sensors only cost Tesla a few dollars each, however, given there are 12 sensors that were removed, Sandy Munro estimates the savings total to around $114 per car for Tesla, or over $200 million in savings in a course of a year.

  1. I just purchased my 2023 model Y with Vision and when parking in my garage I unfortunately have to ignore those stop warnings even when I pull into my driveway. A lot of the time I get the parking assist loading and I just pull out of my spot because sometimes I don't have time to wait for that…I should probably learn where to check what software version I have. I still like my Tesla after a couple of weeks but I never got to have the sensors so I can't really compare the two but the best way I can view when parking is just backing into a spot.

  2. Nothing intrinsically wrong with going video only but the cars need two on fender/bumper cameras front and rear to get accurate depth perception of children. The first one of those who gets run over playing hide and seek – which young children love to do – is going to cost Tesla big time – not just with the law suit – imagine the effect of the adverse publicity and insurance costs on sales, share price and those profits. Elon's good guy, he des not want any of that. Who would? Hopefully our Construction and Use regulations over here will be amended to require on bumper sensing.

  3. I am a Tesla owner and investor. I don't think vision systems work in bad weather and at night. I don't like the idea of removing hardware on cars that you have already bought without compensating the new owners for their loss. I feel cheated. To be told that someday Tesla will fix the problem in a new version of software doesn't fix the problem now that they created. Tesla isn't really updating their over the air software for people that have bought full self driving. As a group, FSD people are way behind the curve for base level software updates. When will we get back all the lost features that we did have and when will they come back? Tesla isn't talking.

  4. I've got a 2023 MY LR with HW4. I feel comfortable backing into a parking space because there are well placed cameras in the back and sides of the car. On the other hand pulling forward into a parking space is scary. I'm so scared of spaces with the concrete parking bumpers that I end up parking way short and getting out to see what the actual distance is. I shouldn't have to do that on a technically advanced car. When I park in my single car garage, it's constantly telling me to stop when I have plenty of space in front of me. I'm not sure how the current camera configuration can fix this issue. The software needs to analyze the scene from further back when it can actually see the floor in the garage before I start pulling in. It's not doing a great job of that right now.

  5. I had a 22 model y and sold it due to starting a business and now I'm able to order and take delivery of a 23 model y this weekend and I'm regretting selling my 22. That being said I'm aware of the frustrations I'm going to face and will have to just trust that Tesla will make this better. Overall I still love the vehicle but profits over people has proven to not be a good move.

  6. Elon is such a conman, talking nonsense about "SNR" (signal to noise ratio) being reduced by omitting the ultrasonic sensors, when the vision-based system is obviously inferior.

  7. I don't mind paying the Xtra $114 for the full suite of sensors.. It can definitely make the car safer and easier to drive. I am sure all of the drivers will agree. So Tesla, don't skimp out on the essentials to save a few bucks. Greed over safety is what caused a lot of other car makers to lose out.. We expect the truth .. Talk to the consumer…

  8. This is one of the many reasons why I haven’t bought a Tesla yet. I’m waiting for 10+ yrs so Tesla can give me a good reason to buy one but nothing yet. I love the company, technology and the drive train but don’t like this complete disregard for customers and lack of niceties like good sound isolation and some buttons etc. I hope they make a nice user friendly real luxury car at some point in future.

  9. Vision sounds cool … If the car can actually see everything – the car can't detect a small child in front of the bumper. Why would they try to go vision, when they don't have full camera coverage?

  10. I will be friggin flabbergasted the day cameras beat ultrasonic sensors for determining the distance of an object. Tesla just hit the delete feature button to save some bucks as soon as they realized the Y was so popular they could remove virtually anything and still sell them. I ordered mine Sunday because the 4Runner was getting hard for my elderly parents to get in and out of and i’m so disappointed to not have these sensors. At least give us the option to turn off the range warnings when parking. id rather do it by eyesight like I always have than be screamed at by my car for shiz it can’t see and doesnt understand.

  11. Tesla made a HUGE mistake in removing ultrasonic sensors!! Vision is never going to be as good or as accurate as ultrasonic due to real world environmental conditions. If I was aware to that I would never buy the car.

  12. For being such a smart person I’m incredibly surprised at how flawed Elon’s logic is with the vision based approach. The point of these advanced systems isn’t to limit them to human abilities but to extend a human’s ability. Yes, humans don’t have sonar but why would pass on our biological limitations?

  13. SAFETY is suppose to be the major emphasis of Tesla. Missy's child hiding in front of the bumper is a Red Flag. It should go to the front of Tesla's To Do List. There should be no compromise here.

  14. I have been driving cars without park assist sensors for 30+ yrs, many people even longer than that, with zero parking crashes. why do some require park assist sensor? I’m sure anyone can learn to park without sensors. Parking sensors is a plus but shouldn’t be required to park a vehicle.

  15. How is your car hardware limited? It has more hardware. Everyone is pretending it's Tesla vision OR ultra sonic. Why not both?
It's not pushing boundaries or whatever, it's purely cost savings. Pushing boundaries would've been developing the system and proving it works first, this is saving money and then trying to justify it, without any evidence your "replacement" can even work.

  16. I think Vision only is very smart in principle. But in practice, they should have left ALL the other sensors in the car and tested vision only in shadow mode until it was ready.

  17. In the end of the story a human being until the 90ies when the sensors habe reached market has had parked via „human vision“
Always. And as car get‘s smarter it will probably able to recognize and remember small objekcts which dissapear even after a day of not being moved. I mean thinc how accurate some peole can park with mileters of space who know their cars just witz 2 eyes. The only question is what happends if someone puts something into the black spots while the tesla sleeps. But generally it does use his cameras 24/7 so maybe even that won‘t be a problem.

  18. Sensor are better in many ways, in fact both system working at the same time is the best way to go. Cameras are weak during low visibility, like fog, etc. In those cases ultrasonic is unaffected. We are paying lots of money for these cars and Tesla cutting corners in 100 dollars sensors is unacceptable.
