BREAKING: Tesla Replaces This Model Y With Cybertruck?!?!

Tesla has been busy with the Cybertruck and with constant leaks and daily pictures of the new truck out in public, it sure feels like customer deliveries are likely imminent. But Tesla just shook things up, and the reasons may be the writing on the wall we have all been waiting for.

In addition, there have been some other updates on Tesla’s website. The Model 3 now has a powered trunk retrofit for older Model 3’s. This kit is $800 and is made for pre-2021 Model 3’s to be installed at a local Tesla Service Center. Given this price includes the install and programing, this doesn’t feel like a terrible deal at all.

In other news, Tesla has cancelled one of the three trims available for the Tesla Model Y. The Model Y AWD seems to have been removed from the order page all together. This 4680 battery powered Tesla Model Y was the first offering from the opening of Giga Texas last year. This special trim comes with the same features found on the Model Y LR AWD out of Fremont, CA, but with the new 4680 battery cells, less range and a slightly lower price.

At the price being asked for the Model Y AWD, it doesn’t make sense to go with this trim over the Model Y LR AWD. On top of lower range, the charging curve on the 4680 battery cells seem to be far inferior to the existing 2170 NCA batteries found in both the Model Y LR and Model Y Performance.

But, I think there is more to this story than just eliminating a limited capability model. Yes, Tesla could simply be taking it offline to make upgrades to the production line. But the reality is that with the imminent launch of the Tesla Cyberturck, it would appear the only other Tesla that will use the 4680 cells in the near future may need the full capacity of every 4680 they can produce today.

Not only have we been seeing the Cyberturck out in the wild, but just this week, we started seeing some new trucks that appear to have the best fit and finish so far, which may indicate that these are final production models. If so, that means that Tesla has turned on the whole production line and is starting to produce customer vehicles.

As always, it’s hard to know exactly what is going on at Tesla and they have done a great job keeping the details of the Cyberturck under tight security. At this point, it should be a matter of only days before we have both the Cybertruck launch event dates, as well as the final details to expect for the Cybertruck.

  1. The full self driving mode price reduced from $15000 to $12000 but they increase the enhanced driving from $5000 to $6000. People should really take the advantage of get the model X plaid it comes with any colors. These price cut has been so unbelievable!

  2. I hope they can sort out the poor performance of the 4680. Definably an inferior product right now against the latest from CATL, BYD and even the 2170. Agree, maybe they have room to dpate with the truck, but charging a big battery / low efficiency truck needs high power curves way above what the MY 4680 has presently. Maybe ok, but not blowing away the competition.

  4. With the poor charging curve (as BTG mentions) of the 4680 battery cells, Supercharging a large 4680 pack in a Cybertruck is possibly gonna suck. Does anyone else have this concern?

  5. The other possibility is that the 4680 has simply failed to deliver on expectations, and is being cancelled. We don’t hear any news about new 4680 production breakthroughs, or volume milestones reached… Berlin production ceased, rather than ramped.

  6. Well, I got my new Model Y LR in Aug 2023 at the price you mentioned in the video.
Enjoy the vehicle with all the features and is good for my driving needs. i did get HW4 and the newer cameras. Did not want to wait for the Juniper to come out in 2024.
Thanks for the video and take care.

  7. I’m not so sure all MYLR vehicles will be coming from Fremont. My 2023 Long Range Model Y was built in Austin, TX. I assume the Model Y assembly line in Texas will still produce them going forward.

  8. I think it's another sign that the Cybertruck is nearing production status. I hope that it goes smoothly so we can get them out there faster. Model 3 took a long time to ramp up, but the Model Y was lightning fast by comparison, and if I recall, they released it 6 months earlier than they originally stated, Spring 2020 instead of Fall 2020.

Which most folks will remember was right as the Covid pandemic started. I wonder how much faster things would've moved along if not for all those issues over the last 3 years.

  9. i'll wait at least a year after the cybertruck hits the streets to see how the market accepts it. if the cybertruck is as pleasing as the y, then i will pull the trigger.

  10. So will they make the MY long range in Texas with the structural battery pack and 2170 batteries? Or will all MY production be in Freemont? Hard to believe they would abandon the front and rear castings for the model Y. I seem to recall at some point they were able to make the Freemont model Y at the Texas factory because the 4680 production wasn't ramping fast enough. Still many questions.

  11. Good job and I agree with your deductions. Bigger packs make the 4680 range reduction a moot point for the Cybertruck. They are in production hell on the Cybertruck right now and Musk is too busy and long past his sleeping in the factory, prowling the production line days and nights. To bad because production engineering is probably his greatest strength and despite his "off with their heads" management style he can be quite effective for ramp up. 🙂

  12. This is minor, but I was a little confused since you kept using the term "All wheel drive model Y", but aren't all model Ys all wheel drive? I assumed you meant non-long range vs. long range. But they are both AWD, so it was confusing. At least for me.
