Apple’s first spatial computing device, Vision Pro, is officially on sale in the United States this month! The highly immersive experience has received many praises, but the price of US$3,499 (approximately 110,000 yuan) still scares many Apple fans. However, the Vision Pro is so expensive that it really makes sense! Because development costs are not included, the cost of parts and materials alone is three times that of the iPhone 15 Pro Max.
Research agency Omdia analyzed that the cost of Vision Pro parts is as high as US$1,542 (approximately 48,710 yuan). This does not include development, marketing, assembly and other costs, which already accounts for 44%. How amazing is this number? Consider Apple’s most expensive iPhone 15 Pro Max. Counterpoint Research previously analyzed that the cost is US$508 (approximately 16,047 yuan), which is only about one-third of the Vision Pro.
Among them, the most expensive parts of Vision Pro are two Micro OLED screens with a resolution of 4K, which are supplied by Sony. Omdia speculates that the cost price of each screen is US$228 (approximately 7,202 yuan). In other words, just two screens will soon catch up with the cost price of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The next most expensive parts are the M2 processing chip, and the R1 chip used to manage the sensors.
In addition to hardware, Apple CEO Tim Cook has also said that Vision Pro contains more than 5,000 patents and believes that the pricing starting at US$3,499 is reasonable considering the value provided by the product.
Although Vision Pro is reasonably expensive in terms of technology and specifications, it still faces many challenges. Some of the first batch of consumers who purchased it have already chosen to return it. The reasons include poor wearing comfort and limited software support. At present, Vision Pro is still generally considered to be difficult to perform productivity work for a long time.
Even Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg personally unboxed the Vision Pro and praised Apple’s amazing hardware performance, but price and software ecology are still a big problem.
