Intel’s 300W Core i9-14900K: CPU Review, Benchmarks, Gaming, & Power

Sponsor: Lian Li O11 Dynamic Evo XL on Newegg
This review tests the new Intel Core i9-14900K CPU and benchmarks the Raptor Lake Refresh part vs. the i9-13900K, AMD R9 7950X, Ryzen 7 7800X3D, the R5 5800X3D, and more. We already reviewed the 14700K when we looked at some of the best CPUs out in 2023, but found that it was unfortunately performing about the same as the 13700K (despite an E-core increase). The 14900K is more familiar to the 13900K than the 13700 & 14700 are to each other, so we’re only expecting pointed uplift from the clock speed increase.

  1. After our 14600K review, is there anything else you want to see us do with these CPUs? Any one-off tests or points of interest worth exploring? Let us know in the comments (new top-level comments are easier to find). Remember that any of those one-offs would take the place of other content, so if you're not interested in seeing more of these CPUs, let us know that as well (so we can prioritize our next content)!

  2. Sincerely hope its worth it…but coming from 9900k and 1080 ti, the 4090 and 14900k should be great

    And pci gen 3, ddr4 to gen (5)…running at g4 amd ddr5

  3. Intel should be benchmarking their "new" CPU's with these benchmark software first so they can JUSTIFY the fact that their NEW GEN CPU's are in fact…."NEW" and deserves the title of being a new generation rather than a re-badged clone of a previous Gen.

  4. I just dont get it. Shouldnt they invest massively into power efficiency. We have all the power we need allready, i am gaming in 4k with my old 9900k cpu without any issues and apparently i am saving money on my energy bill as well, since everything out there need twice as much power, while delivering like a 10% more performance. Am i the stupid one here or is Intel doing it wrong.

  5. sir i am from india the avg temps here in india are 45 degree celcius to 48 degree celcius .Will 360 AIO be enough for i9-14900K or should i buy 420mm AIO or just go for amd 7950x?

  6. I’m coming from an 11900k to the 14900k. This so called “waste of money” is shredding 4K transcodes for my PLEX Server. Only takes 0.5% to 5% of my CPU in Windows 11 to transcode a few 4Ks movies. So it’s a great value to me. And I got it for $389. And it runs at 35 degrees Celsius at idle. I stress tested it the only way I know how, through Handbrake by encoding a full quality 4K Dolby Vision/Atmos movie MKV file to a MP4 Stereo 1080p file and it only reached 75 degrees Celsius and took about 60% processing power and took only 45 minutes. I also have an old 1080ti paired with it and it helps out in the overall process too of course. But this CPU is great for things like PLEX. I use a Noctua NH-D15 to cool the CPU and that cooler is a beast. So yeah this CPU works great for me.

  7. I had a thankfully lossless learning experience with the 14900KF – never trust what you think is stock. I purchased a used 14900KF and got it cheap. My experience of reading I've found most motherboards do not have stock intel settings out of the box. I found mine was allowing unlimited power draw, and also unlimited throttling action. Purchasing this professional level hardware led to a hefty amount of learning and reading (even for my MSI motherboard to control it!)

  8. The power suck on that intel CPU is exactly why I chose to go with the Ryzen 7800X3D on my new build. I'm running Tarkov on 1440p with ultra graphics settings and my CPU sits at 45 to 50 watts power usage. Oh and the temp rarely hits above 60C.

  9. I set my 14900k to 307 amps current limit and 253 watts. Do you know if this is the right setting? I just want to use intel spec and not overclock at all.
