Can The New Raspberry Pi 5 Really Replace Your Desktop PC?

The Raspberry Pi 5 is a tiny computer that is packed with power. It is capable of running a wide range of tasks, including web browsing, word processing, media playback, and even some light gaming. But can it replace a desktop PC?
In this video, we take a look at the Raspberry Pi 5 and see how it performs compared to a traditional desktop PC. We also discuss the pros and cons of using a Raspberry Pi 5 as a desktop replacement.
Overall, the Raspberry Pi 5 is a great option for people who are looking for a low-cost, energy-efficient, and flexible computing device. However, it is important to keep in mind that it is not a replacement for a traditional desktop PC for all users.
If you are considering using a Raspberry Pi 5 as a desktop replacement, be sure to do your research to make sure that it is the right device for you.

  1. I have no AC. I find stock low power systems built for office use do not like extended running in my home. BTW NVME SSDs tend to run pretty hot, so choose a case and cooling system accordingly if you plan on using the Pi5s PCIE NVME hats. The Pi5's improved SD card speed and dual 5 Gig Usb 3 ports offer more bandwidth than the Pi4's shared IO system. I believe YouTube and Amazon video rentals are still limited to Standard Definition. My screen top out at 1080p so I have had good luck with the Pi4 video. Pi5 video should be just that bit better. I lost internet service, when a car took out a telephone pole. My pis clock were lost without Net access. That battery backed up clock would have been nice. I found Chromium or Thorium, open source versions of Google Chrome beat Firefox on the Pi4. Mx linux has a nice version for the Pi4 or Pi 5. It uses the XFCE desktop, on Debian Bookworm. It is a full Bookworm, built off a PiOS core.

  2. What a missed opportunity. Pi foundation removed the hardware encoders and decoders, meaning sluggish performance for both watching videos and video calls. IDK what kind of work involves just browsing web and maybe just using google docs. I would much rather prefer one of the rk3588 boards which now has h264,h265 hardware encoders and decoders. They are now working on av1 decode for the board too. Also, the built-in m.2 and emmc support is so nice to have on an “everyday” board.

  3. When it comes to desktop use the Pi 5 just can't compete with a used thin client PC. I have both. Sure the Pi 5 is new hardware but a quad core thin client (mine is a Dell Wyse 5070) is cheaper, more powerful, it already has a case, it has a power supply, it has a cooling solution, it has SSD storage, there's a lot more I/O and upgradeability. Plus you can use a standard 64-bit Windows install and not worry about performance issues. At least in my opinion there's no contest.

  4. I'd like to build my girlfriend the cheapest little portable computer I can. Do you have any recommendations for a small screen, power source, and potentially a mini keyboard?

  5. About a year after the Raspberry Pi 4 came out, the Raspberry Pi 400 came out. This makes me wonder if the Raspberry Pi 500 will come out in about a year? If so, that would be cool.

  6. Until one of these can smoothly run all of my games at 1080 or better, and my 3D graphic design software, then the answer is: No, it cannot replace my desktop PC.

  7. How did you get Ubuntu running off of the USB so smoothly? I tried and wasn't able to get it working, so I just resorted to using the SD card. 😂

  8. I want to know if the raspberry pi can output good enough performance to use android on it for gaming, emulation and editing videos. Can you please make a vid on this?

  9. Short answer minus the plugging of the PI 5 as is done here. No you cant replace your full desktop pc with this. Nor will it become your favorite gaming emulation device because it cant and never will match up to PC in that regard or even most sbc x 86 boards.

  10. They removed hardware decoding for videos completely from Raspberry Pi 5. Pi 4 had H.264 hardware decoding but Pi 5 has now nothing. This is the reason why it is useless for me.

  11. Once the Pi can do flawless video i would be more interested as a low powered desktop and a native nvme drive slot wouldnt do amiss. Still think these have their place for fairly low cost and effiecency and projects but it's not quite their yet for my needs i'll take an APU miniPC for much more capable desktop experience.

  12. everyone i see is using the cooling system that the raspberry pi foundation sends but i got a different canna kit style cooling system which uses a fan instead of the blower.

  13. When the raspi4 came out I was a little excited so I bought two one used to run the Kodi OS which the raspi 3 and 4( 4 gb) are just ok with, there is some shuddering and freezing at times , I wasn't happy at all for a basic os to use for web browser nad some Youtube videos it is pretty bad slow a whtih my pi3 or pi4 4gb ram it the pi4 4gb barely could run any youtube vids at 1080p so those plans went out the window .|

the pi5 I really want to believe could handle it and even replace my media desktop I use so I could run two monitors one 4k and the other 1080p have kodi running on ithe 4k and the other for my daily web browsers and youtube videos I watch, also have my 8TB hddrive plugged into with one of my smaller m.2drives for the OS but I really doubt that this would be able to do that . when the pi4 4gb came out ther was allot of hype how it could handle such basic stuff and I believed it spent 400CAD on kits adn stuff for both pi4s and well I was very disappointed more in myself because part of me doubted it but I wanted to believe in the hype lol
if it can do such a thing this would drop my electric bill

  14. That's great, thanks.
Thought about replacing my 2011 macbook pro i5 with a Raspberry Pi4B/8GB when that was new.
Old macbook's still steaming along nicely with Linux Mint 21 so there's no hurry, but this looks promising.
Very impressive that it (even very basically) match a desktop for simple tasks, though.
Might be that if something happens to my macbook (8GB/SSD upgraded) that the Pi5 would make a perfectly good substitute with the appropriate managing of expectations given the low cost.
