Is The Apple Watch Ban Overhyped?

In this video, I go over a couple of economics thoughts regarding the recent Apple ban on Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Apple Watch Series 9. The main question: is the news and drama overhyped?

  2. A few recommendations for your vids. Since this was filmed on Dec 21st, the research about Apple Watch no longer being sold by Apple can be done ahead of filming. The ITC case was ruled on in October, and though the veto process was in the works, there was never a guarantee the President would veto. The actual patent litigation is a separate case, but given how slowly court cases take, Masimo went another route to get the devices off the market. Anything can happen with the patent litigation. SPO2 is the blood oxygen sensor, but Masimo doesn't own the patents for all-things blood oxygen, just the particular technology that is claimed to be a violation of the patents (doing more research, Apple has sued Masimo for Watch patent infringements, so it works both ways, and if Masimo was retaliating against Apple using patents that Apple owns, there's an unlikely chance Apple will reach out to Masimo to license blood oxygen tech, which Masimo's CEO has been on the interview circuit saying he'd be open to it, but wouldn't name his ballpark price). As for selling at other retailers, yes, it's still available from other outlets; the ITC ruling only prevents Apple from selling to customers directly, and importing watches with that sensor into the US. However, yes, once the inventory dries up from other retailers, they too won't be able to sell the devices. If you read the statement from Apple to the originators of the news (9 to 5 Mac), they did mention they're doing what they can to get the units back on the market. Only time will tell what that means, but unlikely they'd license the tech from Masimo, and also unlikely they'd wait until the next generation of Watch since that's potentially months and months away given the regular cycle of new products.

  3. I’m in Australia so no problem here. Can’t you just go across the border to Canada and Mexico and buy one. I’ve been to both countries and can get really cheap flight on low cost airline. It’s really sad if you do this as it’s just a watch but it’s an option for you if you absolutely must have one.

  4. Only problem with your theory is that Apple is no longer selling the Apple Watch Ultra one and because of the fact that that glucose monitoring situation started at Apple watches series 6. Apple is no longer selling anything after the series 6 as well so if they decided or if people decided to go onto Amazon or Best Buy they would have to buy the ultra one and the rest of those watches you mentioned, there, which because of the fact that demand is high will happen, and eventually the prices will go up once that demand is no longer able to be met

  5. The Watches aren’t selling that well I think is the bottom line. No way a company Apple’s size lets this happen around Christmas. This whole mess doesn’t pass the smell test.

  6. I feel like Apple is slipping ever since Steve Jobs died. They’re a 3 trillion dollar company. Their lawyers should have seen this coming. And it’s just the new watches that they can’t sell. Don’t understand why everyone is getting so excited.
