The first AI (artificial intelligence) features that Apple is expected to introduce in the upcoming iOS 18 will “run entirely on-device,” Bloomberg’s Mark Garman reports in the latest issue of his newsletter “Power On.” Masu.
“On-device AI”, which completes processing within a device such as an iPhone, has benefits such as processing speed and privacy protection because it functions without an Internet connection or cloud-based processing. On the other hand, the disadvantage is that they do not have access to high-performance cloud infrastructure that can run more advanced AI algorithms.
iOS18’s AI features could work completely on-device
More advanced AI-related features and extensions will require an internet connection, but basic text analysis and response generation functions are expected to be available offline. Apple has been testing text-based response generation capabilities on its devices for some time now, so this feature is likely to be previewed or released first.
However, rather than using its own large-scale language model (LLM) in iOS 18, the company reportedly discussed licensing Google’s generative AI “Gemini” to incorporate it into iOS 18. Regarding individual apps, Messages, Safari, Spotlight search, and Siri are expected to be improved.
This year’s World Developers Conference (WWDC) will be held from June 10th to 14th, and AI-related announcements are expected to be made there.
What will happen to Apple’s own “Apple GPT”?
It was previously reported that Apple is building an Ajax framework internally to develop its own chatbot called “Apple GPT.” However, since it was reported that Google’s generation AI “Gemini” may be adopted in iOS 18, it is thought that there is a delay in the development of Apple GPT.
Even if iOS 18 adopts Google’s AI functions, Apple is reported to have given up on developing the self-driving car “Apple Car” and will focus more on the AI business, so it will eventually only adopt its own AI technology. I think there is a desire to do so.
In any case, iOS18 is expected to include many AI functions and be a large-scale update, so there is no doubt that it will attract more attention than ever before.
