By default, images and videos received in WhatsApp are automatically downloaded to the iPhone. This can put a heavy strain on the iPhone's memory, such as when photos or videos are constantly being posted in a WhatsApp group. With a simple settings in the WhatsApp app, however, the automatic download of photos and videos can be easily turned off.

  1. First open WhatsApp on your iPhone and go to the bottom right under "Settings".
  2. Then select the menu item "Data and Memory Usage".
  3. Now tap on the option "Photos" or "Videos" and check the box "Never".

From now on, pictures and / or videos you get in WhatsApp will no longer be automatically downloaded to your iPhone and saved. If necessary, you still have the option to save WhatsApp images or videos manually.

Incidentally, you can also set here when photos or videos are downloaded to your iPhone. If you choose "WLAN", the content will only be downloaded if you are in the WLAN network. This setting is particularly recommended if you want to save mobile data volume. With the option "WLAN & mobile net" under certain circumstances also your mobile data will be tapped. If you use a mobile phone tariff with low monthly data volume, caution is advised here.

Images and videos you receive via WhatsApp are not only downloaded by default, but also automatically saved as a copy in the Photos app. If you do not want to – because you want to save space – you can easily disable it in the WhatsApp settings.

  1. First open WhatsApp on your iPhone and go to the bottom right under "Settings".
  2. At the next level you choose the menu item "Chats".
  3. Then tap on the button to the right of "Save in recordings".

As soon as you deactivate the button, pictures, sounds and videos sent by your friends no longer automatically end up in the photos of the photos app. Gone are the days when your photo library and your iPhone storage were filled with nonsensical photos and videos.

If you want to re-enable the automatic storage of WhatsApp content in the Photos app – for example, because you appreciate the convenience and anyway have enough space on your iPhone – you can turn on the function as described above.

If you want to disable the automatic saving of images in your photo library just for individual contacts, because they constantly send you any nonsense, you will do the following:

  1. First open WhatsApp on your iPhone and go to the respective chat.
  2. In the chat view you then press on the top left of the profile picture.
  3. Then tap on "Save in Recordings" and select "Never" in the selection menu.

Now only those pictures and videos that you get from this contact in WhatsApp will no longer automatically be saved in the Photos app. Of course, you can always undo this setting in the same way.

By the way: Not only the iPhone memory is so spared from the received images. The photo stream, which shares the last shot photos automatically with all connected devices, remains with this setting also free of unwanted content.

WhatsApp save images on the iPhone – manual version

If your WhatsApp received does not automatically save pictures and videos on your iPhone, but occasionally wants to back up one or the other photo, there are two ways to do it manually.

  1. Open WhatsApp and enter the chat where you received the photo or video.
  2. Hold it down for a moment until the context menu appears.
  3. Select the Save option to save the picture or video to your iPhone.
