  1. the PCIe storage capability of the Pro is actually a bigger deal than you might think, because Apple's own SSDs that you can also buy as separate modules for the Mac Pro are way too overpriced. The 8TB one costs 2.8k and has about 7000 mb/s of read/write performance, while a QWC Accelsior 16TB drive with over 25000 mb/s is still cheaper and of course you're not limited to a single drive with those six slots

  2. I dont need more performance than the mac studio, I just want to spend more money …. so ill get the cheese grater ๐Ÿ™‚ I also have inherited a free M1 macbook pro ..16/1tb . someone spilled some liquid and the keys and screen dont work but as a desktop replacement, ie with external monitor etc, I agree the performance is AMAZING

  3. Lee, 2 min ago I saw a 1 year old video telling me how MacOS was driving you nuts. Either your therapy is working or youโ€˜ve broken the transfer speed barrier ๐Ÿ˜‚.

  4. Thanks for keeping it real! I'm also super happy with my M1 Pro. Recently picked up the Dell XPS 15" (9530), which is a great laptop on the Windows side of things. However, it still make me appreciate my 16" M1 Pro even more; it's simply in a class of its own.

  5. are you still happy with your 14 inch MacBook pro? Or do you think the slightly bigger 16 inch MacBook pro m2 is better for a "desktop replacement" device?

  6. You're absolutely right. No need for a new one. In fact, Apple made such a good computer, it's very difficult for them to bring something really new and useful. M1 laptops were a lucky mistake. Lucky us!

  7. The Mac Pro is about PCIe expansion for internally mounted I/O cards and storage. I own and use both a Mac Pro and a Mac Studio and use both daily. The Studio requires many external boxes and thunderbolt and USB hubs and lots of wires all over the place so I eventually rack mounted it. My Mac Pro delivers a less cluttered environment (far fewer hubs) and its PCIe based SSD RAID storage is MUCH faster than thunderbolt 3 or my 10Gbps network compared to the Studio when it comes to dealing with multiple TB scientific data sets. I wind up using the Mac Pro about 90% of the time and the Studio the other 10%.

  8. 2020 Lee would think this video was AI propoganda ! LOL . Listening to him talk to positively about the mac and macOS was incredible! I was in the same boat years ago and I will never go back to a Windows PC.

  9. It's funny how people keep talking about the extreme niche cases that justify needing a Mac Pro when 99.999% of Studio buyers don't need Studio level of compute (incl. the base model). I think people decide they need perf once becomes affordable, sort of like MP and cameras. The Pro really comes down to if need/want the storage internal and speed bump over what tb4 provides. Agree, Pro is stupidly more expensive, but people buying these things will be writing off as biz expense, and diff in price quite a bit less as % when when comparing "well equipped" vs. base configs. Personally, I'd rather spend the extra 30% (well configured) and have the flexibility to grow storage internally, esp. for working w/ video, which these higher spec machines are targeting.

  10. Lee, What is the toughest video task youโ€™re assigning to your MB Pro? Considering getting one as a desktop replacement with the current sales out there

  11. I am hoping Apple will allow upgrading of the chip for a few generations in the tower. That would make the MP a better buy long term IMO. Otherwise it's hard to justify unless you need some sort of PCIE card for your profession (audio people primarily comes to top of mind)

  12. You mention that your Macbook Pro powers two 4K monitors. I need a good monitor for a Macbook Air to edit photographs. Which two monitors do you have and are you happy with the color, contrast and brightness, i.e. would they be good for Photoshop and video editing? Thanks for any insight.

  13. Another rare clear-headed video on YouTube. And Lee's point about not ever wanting or needing a desktop computer is such an amazing point. I know he's touched on aspects of it before, but I wonder if Lee could make a video on "A Day in the Life of My Desktop Computer that is Really a Laptop." He could show us all the ways he learned to make it work like that.
