M1 Max MacBook – Best Bang for Your Buck in 2024?!

After trying out the M3 chips and really liking what Apple is doing, I decided to buy the older M1 Max to see if it’s still good even years later. It turns out, it sure is! So if you’re considering buying a new/used computer, here’s why I think you should consider the M1 Max.

FYI this M1 Max has 10/32 cores with 32gb ram and a 1tb hard drive.

  1. I have a mid – 2012 Macbook Pro 13" with 16GB RAM, 2.2Ghz i5 and 1TB storage, which I use for music production (Ableton) and soon to be getting into photo/video editing… Hoping to get a 16" M1 Max 32GB 1TB soon… Will it be much of a jump in performance??

  2. It's hard to recommend anything else since Apple came out with M chips! Incredibly performant and efficient, it's like alien tech! It's so far ahead of Windows laptops, it's crazy!

  3. I found a brand new fully loaded M1 Max (32-core GPU, 64GB RAM, 2TB) for less than half the cost of a similar spec'd M3 Max. Best decision ever

  4. It is just a pity and shame how much they charge for RAM and SSD upgrades. I live in Europe and those prices are much higher here than in the USA. Dont know why is the upgrade so expensive

  5. I have an m1 max 16 inch with 64gb ram and 4tb storage I got in April of 2022. I've had the machine for almost 2 years now and have loved it. I upgraded from a 13 in m1 that I handed down to my dad. Right now I have like 35 cycles on my battery and 100% battery health. This machine has handled basically everything I've thrown at it with ease.

I still think they are great machines, however, I would caution anyone buying them that software support will probably run out somewhere in the realm of 2026-2028. So buying an M2 or M3 will get you longer support. So if you plan to keep the machine for more then 3-4 years and you have cash, I would get an M3.

I agree with a lot of what you said in the video. Also, I terribly miss bootcamp and being able to directly boot into Windows. That was amazing and I miss it more and more as the Apple Silicon era goes on.

  6. I'm totally with you. If you can pick up a loaded up M1 or M2 laptop used/refurb and can get large storage, more ram and a Max chip for less than an entry level M3. Do it all day long. I feel the same as you that every day I use my M2 Max 32 it's a treat to use. I'd likely be just as happy with an M1 Max.

  7. I've just got myself a M1 Max 16 inch 64gb ram 1 Tb ssd for 40% cheaper from original price. Battery cycle count only 30! Absolute BEAST! Gonna stay w me for years πŸ™‚

  8. I went with M3 Max simply for 128GB of RAM. M1 series caps out at 64GB. I'm running LLM's locally on my machine. Not happy how much it costed for the RAM spec up, but I'm happy to know I will never need to buy another machine in my lifetime again.

  9. So great to see you end up staying with M1 Max. I'm also holding on to the M1 Max and continue to wait for the M4 Max to be launched. They need to do some power efficiency improvement over the M3 Max. I think if you crank the M3 Max up it will use more power than the M1 Max and M2 Max. This is not a good news if the creators need to max out their computers for hours or days to render something.

  10. I ended up really appreciating your reviews. I went with the m3 max. I had an old windows surface book for 5+ years and surface support is horrible replacing the battery wasn't a possibility and surface is no longer in Canada so repairs and services are hard to get. And most gaming laptops have huge shipping times for the higher end specs and service is a bit of a hit or miss. I got a bit of a student discount and on top of that my credit card gives me an extended warranty. I plan on using mine for heavy photo editing, video editing, and for use when I travel. It was a big cost, but I couldn't get the extra insurance and benefits on a refurbished device. But watching your videos was so much more helpful than a lot of the videos out there.
