UPDATE (September 2021): Hello! As things stand, it seems like this video is becoming more and more outdated as time goes on, and I’m seeing more people who’s issues aren’t getting resolved with the help of this video. This is likely because of 1 of 2 things:
-The route I use to fix the issue has been patched through a few years of Focusrite/Mac OS updates, and isn’t the correct way to go about it anymore.
-For some individuals, the issue has less to do with their OS’ compatibility with the product and more to do with an outside variable that I had zero idea how to resolve. To be perfectly honest, I barely have any experience with this issue as it is, and only really compiled research that led to my solution of this problem at that time.
I’m keeping the video up for this point in time, but I will probably delete it/private it in the near future. As I see it based on comments, it’s not helping/potentially only making things worse now. If the video does help you, let me know through comments and I can consider keeping the video up, so long as it is benefiting at least a select few.
That’s pretty much it. Good luck to you all on this issue! If the video doesn’t work for you, and you’re trying to figure out a solution elsewhere, my suggestions would be to research whether you could use a Virtual Machine and purchase a copy of Window 10 to get this to work, or just don’t invest in Apple Products anymore. Since this video’s creation, I’ve jumped back on Windows, and the Focusrite works like a dream there. Thanks for reading!

So this was a big problem for me, and I figured anyone had bought the product as of late has probably run into the same problem. Since I managed to solve it, I figured I’d make this video to help the people like me who had a hard time finding properly explained directions elsewhere. Guided steps will also be further down in the description.
-1. Unplug the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 from your computer to prevent further crashing.
-2. Open Finder on your Mac.
-3. With Finder open, hold Command, Shift, and G at the same time.
-4. With this new search engine open, type in the following file extension: /System/Library/Extensions
-5. Look for Scarlett2ndGen.kext
-6. Throw that dirty bastard in the trash, then empty your trash.
-7. Go take out your real trash.
-8. Restart your computer.
-9. Voila! Share on any forums you see where people have this same problem!

Bro you are the man. This post is still good just solved my issue. There is one extra step. If you have a older interface that cause the issue and purchased a new Scarlett 2I2 you have to delete the Application for your older interface for me it was the TASCAM US – 144 . Second I had to go to the MIDI folders under Libraries and delete it from there. Last I did your step delete it from the Extensions folder and now I am almost at a hour of listening time. usually would crash my IMAC after 10 mins. so far so good . Thank you again for posting this video very needed.
I had this SAME issue. I uploaded and deleted all of my software, pro tools, albeton, etc many times, I fought with London england for making a piece of crap and NOW, I pushed the button 48 v right beside the mic and I got sound. DOn't buy this companies interface, the reason mine stopped working was because I watched some movie that wanted to silence my mic; never again, PUSh the 48 v button by your mic. that is what fixed mine.
The file is not there.
My issue is that when I'm using to record vocals it works then it crashes randomly any little touch and it crashes on me idk why it does that
cant find this file I need a fix asap please!
does anyone if this happens when u are using a condenser microphone with 48v turned could damage the microphone?

But why did you had an Scarlett 2i2 kext in the first place? Scarlett in the Mac is plug and play…you dont need any extensions or drivers.

I've had one since august, 17'. Still can't do anything with this worthless piece of trash. The "included bundle codes" don't even work, after making over six goddamn accounts/passwords on all these sites, the software just keeps making excuses to not function. Pro-tools first, which I tried repeatedly to get, does not even open after uploading, said it was finished, then said it hadn't finished?! Downloading, Then back at the focusrite bundle code page, it gives me this "oh, gee whiz, only one code per customer. You're shit out of luck". It never downloaded properly, so I presume that was a ripoff. as an alternative, the overly complex-looking Abelton live lite REFUSES TO OPEN, saying "no avid hardware detected" , (AFTER I wasted all that time making over six senseless accounts/passwords on sites I have no intention of ever go back to…) Due to extreme frustration, I even went elsewhere to try and download the pro-tools se free version, which also won't even start, just keeps popping up windows claiming "no hardware is detected"…When the damn focusrite is plugged in right there via usb, with the light on, have my laptop audio set all through the damn thing. Which does nothing. I JUST WANT TO RECORD SOME SONGS. Not really expecting a reply here, but this is what I've been going through. Nothing should be this ridiculous to even get started using. Btw, I have an ASUS laptop with windows, so not sure if you know what the issue is here, seeing how your video here says you are in mac. My being nearly computer illiterate isn't helping much either, but all these people keep saying "How easy it is, to record music at home, with a low budget!"… when it's clearly such a simple thing at all , and months later I still haven't been able to so much as get started. It's beyond frusterating.

I'm having the same issue but for windows fl studio. Its always crashing whenever I switch to focusrite. Help!
JerBer, man, you're a godsend! Doc!, I was having a fit! I just purchased the 2i2 and it bugging the heck out of me why it wasn't working. Thanks for helping me to avoid a migraine .
You are GOD Man! I have had this problem for the last 7 months, so I had to use a backup company mac for recording and than my own for mixing etc.. Lot of pain. I even thought about getting a different interface, I was so pissed.
Everything is back to normal now thanks to this video!

After updating the system on my macbook pro , Scarlett 2i2 does not appear in the output only for the input.
I have tried it on my friends macbook and it works fine
