Tesla Model 3 – 10k Mile Review – Worth It? Maybe Not!

We have now had our Tesla Model 3 Long Range for over 6 months and 10k miles. In that time, we have learned a lot more about this Tesla than we ever thought we would. Having had our beloved Tesla Model Y for so long, and the similarity between that car and this, we were not expecting to have the position on this car that we have.

Our second Tesla was a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range. When we took delivery of that Model 3, we ended up placing an order for another since the lead time was about a year. Once it came close to being delivered we changed our order to a Model 3 LR, and were able to keep pricing from a year before. Because of this, we were able to sell our Model 3 SR for enough money to upgrade to a Model 3 LR for about $100.

10k miles really isn’t enough time to determine the mechanical durability of the Tesla, but in comparison to our other Tesla’s, this seems to be about the same, meaning I anticipate a trouble free ownership. In that 10k miles, we have had zero maintenance and have only had to top off some washer fluid.

What we have learned about our Tesla Model 3 LR though surprised us. After owning this Tesla for about 6 months, we have yet to use any of the additional capabilities it has over the Model 3 SR we sold. We have not taken any road trips, have not saved time with faster charging, and have not been in a situation where we needed AWD. Now the 0-60 of 4.2 seconds is really nice and far superior to the 5.8 seconds the Model 3 SR sports. But other than that, it feels somewhat wasteful having the LR over the SR.

In the end, my observations, and recommendations, are to simply get the SR Model 3. The LR Model 3 would be a nice to have if you road trip often, have a long commute, or it is your only EV. Other than that, the SR does everything this LR does, but with more efficiency, less range, 1 less motor and a little slower. But it is also $7k cheaper at time of posting.

That leads me to the final observation. The Model 3 LR is not even able to be custom ordered anymore. You can only get a LR Model 3 by finding one in inventory. Couple that with the price difference between the 3 and Model Y, you are much better to spend the extra few thousand dollars to get the Model Y. The LR Model 3 is just in an awkward position between the Model 3 SR and Model Y LR. The Model 3 P is there for performance and the Model 3 SR is there for cost. Otherwise, the Model Y offers substantially more room, and comfort for the money.
