i9-14900K vs Ryzen 7 7800X3D – The Ultimate Faceoff (UNDERVOLTED)!

Let’s test the FPS and power efficiency of the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, Ryzen 9 7950X and i9-14900K to see how BAD the Intel counterpart is tuned out of the box and how much better it can get. The Ryzen 9 7950X has similar problems though no not to the degree of the i9… The X3D however… complete winner and I show why in today’s video.

  1. I've been a PC enthusiast/builder since 1999, love building my rigs, love spending my hard earned money on hardware. My first PC was and old 486 family PC (way late in 1997), and my first real build was a Pentium II 350mhz, been on team Red and Blue several times, going back and forth through the years.

After 17 straight years of Intel, from a Core 2 duo to a i9-9900k, I've decided in 2023 to try AMD again (didn't had one since Athlon 2000XP).

I'm baffled how my 7800X3D consumes 50/60w on heavy demanding games, overclocked and undervolted , while producing better results than the 14900K on 97% of games.

If your PC is focused on gaming there's no discussion here, 14900K is insanely power hungry for no return whatsoever on gaming (awesome on productivity though).

I'm not saying the 14900K is a bad CPU, not at all, just completely inefficient for no return (again, on gaming). But lets be honest, even consuming those high watts the the difference on the electricity bill isn't that significant (in my country we're talking about a 70/80€ a year), but I couldn't convince myself to go with the 13900k at the time, and definitely not the 14900k.

I hope that Intel manages to get their game straight and release something in the future that makes more sense, I'll have no trouble on changing again to team blue if things get better significantly.

The only thing I dearly miss is overclocking on Intel, the hours messing with voltages and multipliers, running stability test and pushing the limits on the system without having a fans sounding like a vacuum cleaner (had a i7-3770k at 4.7Ghz and a i9-9900k all cores at 5.2Ghz). Overclocking on AMD is boring AF, unless you have a master's degree in computer science and actually know how to mess with the little knobs (or perhaps I'm just a dumb Intel guy that's not familiarized enough with the AMD BIOS stuff).

  2. 20 years from now Intel's 1095000 power draw = Lights go dim in the city!!!!!!!!
and AMD?…..7800X3D still going strong at 80 watts and still B slapping the crap out of Intel!!!!!!!!!!

  3. i just bought the 7800x3d combo from Microcenter and all I have to say is WOW! Such a great CPU for gaming. My best buy of 2023. My 7900XTX is just humming out FPS like Oprah hands out gifts on her show.

  4. What a waste! Ultimate my a$$. "Tuning" 14900K with 65W is nice for a scientific comparison, but absolutely idiotic, especially if keeping all the E-cores enabled. It's equally misleading when showing 7950X3D too, 16 core chip made to run at 65W, of course it will be weaker, since it has the overhead of the extra chiplet, the extra 8 cores.

It's like buying a bigger car and complaining that it has lower mpg than a smaller car. Or that when fuel starved, it's slower than a small car which is fuel limited to the same absolute value, it just so happens to be the normal fuel intake it needs.

I was hoping for an actual useful and realistic presentation of undervolting and limiting the CPU to, say, 200W, where it's easy to be cooled by a high-end cooler. And see the comparison then. Like that graph with the 252W limit, where it showed 56 less Watts, only 3 FPS average lost.

  5. In CS clips your shot looks much better on the Intel system. I have ask is there a difference in input latency/responsiveness if you setup the systems side by side and switch between them.

  6. It would be good to include idle or normal usage (browsing, youtube), see, if you spend 10 hours working on pc or doing casual stuff and then play 2 or 3 hours, the advantage may be on Intel side.
Yet for this particular CPU 14900K considering the price difference 7800X3D is clear winner even for "casual" PC usage. For 13600K that could look different

  7. Performance per watt is so important to me because my home is completely solar so I'm probably a bit biased when I say this, I'd really like to see that becoming a spec on all cpu's.

  8. I personally Think The Market is comparable with Each brand pulling ahead at times.
However, I can't but Not Notice quite a few relatively followed channels on YouTube recently making Videos I SWITCHED BACK TO INTEL.

They all claim they used High-end CPUs like 7950X and are going to 14900K
What I noticed Most of them first use Gigajunk AM5 Boards. And complain about features, Layout of the board etc… Also how AMD(that doesn't update BIOS's) doesn't update BIOS. That's the Board manufacturer's Job. AMD makes CPU's, Instructions and Gives them to MB Makers to craft a Bios for their own product. Same as intel.
In All Fairness I had No Bad Gigabyte intel Board, But since AM2 AM3 AM3+ FM2 FM2+, Especially AM4 I have 12 dead Extra Durable Gigajunk boards 8 New 3 570 Aorus Elite and 4 used. Out of 23 I used in Builds.
No dead or faulty intel Boards.
They all got replaced with MSI or AsRock/ASUS and still kicking today perfectly, Even AM3 and FM2 ones.
One X570 I RMAed they Told me the Board is Good It works perfectly on Stock clocks
    🤣
I Should Use a Top shelf Board on Stock Memory and CPU Clocks.
    🤣
Swapped for X570 MIS MPG Gaming Plus, EVERYTHING works perfectly, 2 years now.
If if someone is known For Shitty Support of AMD its Gigajunk with their always all Beta lineup of Bios, soft Bricking after enabling AMP etc…

Second they seem to all complain AMD doesn't run RAM clocks as high even When AMD outperforms in Tasks and Games With lower clocks. It is somehow still a very important thing.
    Also, CPU clock speeds.
I Guess gotta impress forum Bro's with Numbers. Right?
And finally 14900K is a Overpriced refresh of a 13900K, sooo… What are we achieving again?
    Stinks very intel to me.
They already showed they are desperate with the AMD snake oil salesman…

  9. I just like the fact that CPUs aren't just being dominated by one company anymore. AMD really have turned it around from those dreadful bulldozer days.
I have a 7600x and love it. My intension is to now wait for the 8000 series and see what 3D chips are on offer.

  10. What about idle power consumption of 7800x3d. I heard it is around 30-40 watts. Is it true that Intel has lower idle power draw?
I was thinking of buying 14700k undervolting it to 135-150 watts. So I can have good performance to power ratio.
Like lower idle power draw and higher performance in non gaming things.
And little lower performance in gaming than 7800x 3d.

  11. Maybe try locking the memory-infinity mesh clocks to 1:1, and lock it to either 6000 or 6400MHz; running a multiplier negates any benefit of faster memory speed negatively =|

  12. SMH you can't just make it all the same … You have to max them all out to make it real . 14900 can run 8k plus on ddr5 .. AMD can not . So a true test would be at the highest possible overclock for all CPU s

  13. This year i build a pc, first one in a long time… As i wanted to get the max out of a small case without watercooling i picked the 7800x3d over the intel heat generators… Build turned out great, cool quiet and fast… Sama im01 case.
