Testing Tesla Refresh Model X Falcon Wing Door Sensitivity

In todays video I test the sensors on the 2022 Tesla Model X Refresh falcon wing doors to determine if the doors will close on small objects. We use my daughters huge stuffed animal dog that she’s named Big D.
Enjoy.

  1. Wow I’m surprised and concerned, but I wonder if the sensor will calculate the pressure applied to shut the door or not.
Thank you for another great video, still waiting for our MX.

  2. There are no internal active sensors on the door. The only active sensors for the door are right in the middle of the falcon wings on the roof and another one facing the outside right in the middle of the actual door. The only thing that stops the motors are the force feedback sensors feeling too much resistance. This usually works pretty good as anyone getting there arm or foot stuck in the door will start to push on it as soon as it happens and even if they didn't the door will stop before any serious damage is done. The only place on the door that can be a real hazard is where the roof and the door come together as the moment is short so it takes a lot of pressure to trip the sensor. This is where fingers can go if they were standing up and it could probably break skin and even fingers. I have seen one of these tests done with a carrot as they are harder and a little more brittle like a bone could be. The biggest scare we had in our X was when our 3 year old was crying and kicking and she started kicking at the door as it was coming down from her car seat and I worried that her ankle might end up getting twisted as the door comes down. As with any automatic doors like the ones on most minivans you really have to make sure the kids don't put their digits or appendages into the tracks or in front of the doors as they are closing.

  3. Glad to see Big D survive! Nice unscientific video, love it. When I was a kid, we used to have a 3 door car, and my mom always forgot that we were in the back of the car, and when we were going out, she hit us so many times in the head that is a miracle I'm still alive.

It’s great to have you back with another great video.

  4. Another great video thank you! Question my SIS model Y does not detect cars coming down the street when she is backing out of driveway. My parents subaru outback does very quickly. Any thoughts on this for your x or y? Thx

  5. Based on this video I guess that there aren't any visual sensors but it measures the force applied to closing. If it's too much it stops. But will it be enough to seriously hurt someone it's hard to tell?

  6. Good to have you back. I’m amazed at how poorly the doors performed. Only the thickness of the stuffed dog prevented it from closing. A standard garage or elevator door would recoil back these stayed where they were. Sincerely Tesla and anyone with a Model X should pay attention to your video! You made a fun and important video with this one, thanks glad I got a model S.

  7. A STAR is born! Miss D is SO destined to be a BRILLIANT engineer!
Keep up the interaction, Dad! Your daughter is obviously, very smart and YOUR influence can help her become an engineer at Tesla. (May want to record taking her over to Tesla's Austin plant and see what she thinks!)
Nice test! I have NO DOUBTS that someone will "bubble this up" to Elon (or someone VERY senior at Tesla!), so that they take a look at this.
At the very least, GLAD that you did these tests AND emphasized to folks NOT to let kids play around the doors, etc. The doors DO look fun (even to adults!) and there needs to be a healthy dose of safety around it.
I'm still trying to decide between the X and Y and I think you just helped me a bit in making my decision (although the X has a MUCH better interior!).
    Keep up the great work!

  8. I loved that video. I think Tesla should put out a video like yours if they don’t already have one. Maybe Tesla can “tweet” the message to owners. Lol. Btw your daughter was GREAT on this video.

  9. Getting back to you on missed paint and possible rust on underside of frunk. I had same issue. Frunk is aluminum my service tech informed me. Can't rust.
